Here’s a neat offer for Destiny fans. For a limited time, anyone that buys Bungie’s upcoming game for PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 will be able to get a free upgrade to the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version (respectively). You won’t even have to give up your last-gen copy.

There are a couple of catches here. The offer’s only good until January 15, 2015, and you can only upgrade within the console family (ie no PS3 > Xbox One or Xbox 360 > PS4). More importantly, you’ll need to purchase a downloadable version of the game from your last-gen console of choice. It doesn’t matter if you get the Digital Guardian Edition, the Expansion Pass, or just the base game; any content you buy on the last-gen console carries forward to the current-gen, so long as you download it from the console’s online store within the digital upgrade’s timeframe.

What’s especially neat about this offer is the fact that character stats in Destiny carry back and forth between last- and current-gen. So you can play for 10 hours with a bunch of friends on your Xbox 360, jump over to join some other friends on Xbox One, then go back to 360, with all of your progress intact.

You can find more details right here, but it’s pretty straightforward: Buy last-gen game/content as a download, get download current-gen version of game/content for free.

Correction: An earlier version of this post incorrectly noted that the digital upgrade also worked backwards, allowing a user to get a PS3/Xbox 360 download for free with the purchase of a PS4/Xbox One.
