When it comes to storing your camera gear at home, there are plenty of options. I keep my unused gear safe and sound inside a Pelican case, for example. But not everyone has a Pelican on hand, and not everyone wants their gear locked away where it can sometimes be a pain to search through.
If you’re looking for a good home storage solution, we’ve rounded up three different DIY options that you can use and tweak to your liking. Each method serves its own purpose, so take a look at all of them and see what works best for you.
Door Organizer
You know those shoe organizers that hang on the back of doors? They don’t need to be for shoes only. Seen in the above video, YouTuber MichaelTheMentor shows how he’s turned a cheap and simple door organizer into the ultimate lens organization system.
Not all lenses will fit, but if you get a sturdy enough organizer, you shouldn’t have a problem storing a plethora of smaller lenses and flash units. One problem to watch for is the swinging of the organizer when you open and close the door. You don’t want your lenses getting knocked around every time you open the door, so it might be smart to put some sort of padding behind the organizer, be it thin foam or even an old fleece blanket.
Wine Rack
If you prefer to show off your camera gear at home, another option is to use a wine rack. Illustrator Ryan Hamrick shoots with Samsung’s mirrorless camera system and decided to display all of his lenses neatly within wine racks.
Any wine rack would work, and you have the option of hanging it on the wall or simply sitting it on your desk. As for downsides, besides being out in the open, where would-be thieves could easily spot the expensive gear, this uncovered option means you’ll likely find dust on your gear, so proceed with caution if you decide to take this route.
Charging Box
This one might not fall under the same category as the other two, but we’re going to let that slide. As important as it is to keep your gear organized, one of the bigger challenges is keeping your chargers organized.
To solve the never-ending issue of tangled cords, cinematographer Yair Shiloach created a DIY charging case, which has enough room to charge over a dozen batteries at once. Using a hard aluminum case alongside a custom power unit, Shiloach was able to make an all-in-one solution that’s as easy to use on the go as it is at home.
