Rumors were flying prior to CES 2013 that LG would be bringing its Optimus G2 smartphone along to the Las Vegas show, speculation we now know to be untrue. As with many other manufacturers, LG decided to hold back any big-name smartphone releases until Mobile World Congress next month.

It even went as far to say so itself, confirming it has several high-end devices with a variety of screen sizes scheduled for the coming year, and at least one of them would be revealed at MWC. As the follow-up to the Optimus G was absent from CES, surely it would appear in Barcelona?

According to the latest report, the Optimus G2 won’t be sunning itself in Spain either, as LG is going to stick to an annual update release schedule for its flagship Android phone, which means an August or September announcement is more likely. This fits in with a report published in November last year, which also said the Optimus G2 wouldn’t arrive until late 2013.

So what will LG use to impress us during Mobile World Congress? A Korean newspaper says LG will announce a tablet/smartphone hybrid at the show, ready to challenge the might of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. LG’s new device – its third to offer such a form factor after the Optimus Vu and Vu:2 – will have a 5.5-inch display and a 1080p resolution.

As the Galaxy Note 2 continues to increase in popularity, many manufacturers have decided a model with a 5-inch-plus screen belongs in their own ranges. Over the past few months, HTC, Sony, ZTE, Huawei and other, lesser known brands such as Oppo and Lenovo have gone on to announce a crossover handset.

LG is confident its new hardware will dazzle buyers, as it’s apparently expecting its 2013 range of smartphones to push the firm towards sales of 45 million before the end of the year.
