ZTE shows off its V81 8-inch Android tablet, but keeps quiet about the cost

ZTE V81ZTE is getting better at releasing interesting, well-specced smartphones, but its tablet range still leaves plenty to be desired; however, it has revealed images and spec details for a new tablet, named the V81, and published them on its website. It appears ZTE’s plan emulates that of its competitors: provide a good spec tablet at a potentially low cost.

The V81 starts off on a positive note as it has an 8-inch screen, but it’s let down by a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution. Powering the device is a dual-core, 1.4GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, while the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system is bang up-to-date. The slightly disappointing 4GB of internal storage space can at least be boosted by a microSD card up to 32GB, plus the V81 has both a 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA video call lens.

Further good news is its built-in cellular connectivity, along with – if we’re reading the specs correctly, a full-size USB and HDMI port. Of course, both of these could turn out to be their miniature counterparts, but if not, it’s a considerable bonus for anyone wanting a tablet suitable for media consumption. The spec list concludes with GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 and a 3700mAh battery.

The V81 ends up with a feature list to challenge the iPad Mini, but given ZTE’s build quality probably won’t be up there with Apple’s, we’re expecting the price tag to be considerably less. ZTE hasn’t listed a cost or release date for the V81, however we may only have to wait until Mobile World Congress to find out these final, but important details.

Why I chose the Supernote Nomad over other e-ink tablets
The Supernote Nomad is the e-ink tablet I did not know I needed, and now I cannot put it down.
Supernote Nomad in hand

Supernote Nomad has become my favorite purchase of the last year, and believe me, the decision to buy it was not easy. I didn’t realize that the e-ink tablet landscape had become so vast, and all the tablets I looked at had at least a few compromises that were a deal breaker for me.

Finally, after comparing and cutting out at least half a dozen e-ink tablets from my list, I settled on the Supernote Nomad. Yes, it also has some drawbacks, but there were five main reasons I settled on it.

Android finally gets a fitting answer to the iPad mini, and it looks stunning
The OPPO Pad Mini doesn't just compete with the iPad mini on paper; it beats it on thickness, battery, charging speed, and price, while matching it on the one thing that actually matters

Apple has owned the compact premium tablet segment for years, but there’s a new contender in the market that runs on Android and takes on the iPad mini for everything it stands for.

Unveiled alongside the Find X9 Ultra, the Oppo Pad Mini comes with an 8.8-inch 2.5K OLED panel (2520 x 1680 pixels) in a 3:2 aspect ratio. This is the same, near-square aspect ratio that makes the iPad mini ideal for reading, note-taking, consuming content, and other productive workflows.

Asus leak shows an iPad Pro competitor with a familiar design and 144Hz OLED screen
A new Asus tablet just leaked, and it has all the makings of a serious iPad rival.
Stage Manager on M4 iPad Pro.

Asus is gearing up to launch a new tablet, and thanks to a fresh leak from AndroidHeadlines, we have our first good look at both its design and the specs. Before we get into the numbers, let's talk about how it looks.

The Asus Pad features uniform, ultra-thin bezels all around, giving it that premium, modern look. The frame is metal with a slightly curved profile, while the back is completely flat. I like the curved frame as it will make the tablet easier to hold.
