Thanks to the changing political climate in Sweden, the Pirate Bay is on the move.
For the past three years, the controversial file-sharing network has relied upon a political party known as the Swedish Pirate Party to provide it with the bandwidth necessary to keep operational. However, the party had been forced to sever ties with the Pirate Bay following a threat of legal action by a Swedish copyright watchdog called the Rights Alliance. Last week, the Rights Alliance sent the Pirate Party and bandwidth provider Serious Tubes a letter promising legal action on behalf of multiple rights-holders if the organizations didn’t end their associations with the Pirate Bay by Tuesday. After reportedly considering their options – including financial ones – for a legal battle, the group decided that it wasn’t up for a potentially long-running and costly fight and reluctantly withdraw its bandwidth.
That doesn’t mean that the Pirate Bay has been left adrift, however; the void left by the Swedish Pirate Party has been filled by the brand-new Norwegian Pirate Party and Catalonian Pirate Party, both of which have appeared to offer the network new portals through which to interact with the outside world. Talking to Torrent Freak, the Pirate Bay’s psuedonymous “Winona” said that the network “did of course have lots of backup transit lined up for ages,” adding that this was the first time that the network has decided to use two portals simultaneously. It’s a divide and conquer mentality that, it’s hoped, will confound future attempts to shut the network down in the same way that the Swedish portal was closed. “It will be interesting to see who is now blamed for hosting TPB,” Winona said. “In the end, maybe the anti-interneterians will understand that they can’t win a fight when they have the people against them.”
Interestingly enough, even with the Pirate Bay safely placed elsewhere, the Swedish Pirate Party aren’t entirely withdrawing from the battle. The Party’s leader, Anna Troberg, has released a statement in support of their Norwegian and Catalonian brethren, saying that the successful transition is “testament to the pirate movement’s maturity and strength.”
“We help each other and work with our sight set firmly on the future,” she said. “Today, there are more than sixty different Pirate Parties all around the world. Every cut connection to The Pirate Bay will generate two new connections.”
Troberg explained her own party’s reluctance to face a lawsuit down by suggesting that “it would be crazy to enter a game where the rules are decided by the other team.” Still, there may be a legal showdown with the Rights Alliance nonetheless; just not the one initially expected. “The Pirate Party has a board meeting in a few days,” she said. “I will recommend the board to file a police report against the Rights Alliance for unlawful coercion.”
