In an entertaining Ask Me Almost Anything thread on Reddit, HTC representatives have committed the company to providing two years of major Android updates for all of its future flagship devices. The news will come as welcome relief for anyone who’s had to wait through delays in the newest versions of the mobile OS trickling down the pipe.
“Given the immense resource requirements for updates we can’t solve all our past issues,” wrote the HTC USA Product Team, “but today we are making a commitment to support all new North America flagship devices going forward with all major Android updates for two years after their release date.”
HTC has experienced difficulties in getting its HTC One X and HTC One X+ phones upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat, but the company did confirm that the HTC One will be getting the freshest flavor of Android in the near future. T-Mobile customers should see the firmware update in a few days’ time.
There was good news too for Windows Phone users. “As strong partners of Microsoft, we’re working with Microsoft on the Blue update on Windows Phone 8X and will continue to take new products into consideration. Nothing concrete right now, but who knows!” read one of the response posts from a HTC staff member.
The rest of the thread had little in the way of concrete information but it’s worth a read if you’re an HTC user. The team said it was “exploring possibilities” for offering Google Play Editions for more of its devices, while eulogizing about the strengths of its Sense skin and promising that customer support remains a top priority for the firm.
