Pure Digital—makers of the popular Flip video cameras and new Cisco acquiree—have introduced new versions of their Ultra and Ultra HD video recorders, featuring twice the memory, bigger screens, and AA battery packs that simplify recording video on the go.
The second-generation standard-definition Flip Ultra features 4 Gb of built-in memory and a larger 2-inch no-glare display. The units can capture video at full VGA resolution at 30fps progressive scan, and users can immediately watch videos on their televisions using a supplied connector cable. The Flip Ultra records in H.263 format (so the videos work with Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and most other applications), and the system now runs on two AA batteries so users can quickly pop in more power without having to wait for batteries to recharge. (A rechargeable battery back is sold separately.) The Flip Ultra is on sale now from major retailers for a suggested price of $149.99 in white, black, pink, or yellow.
Not to be left out, the Flip UltraHD shares the Flip Ultra’s form factor, but records high-definition 720p video (1,280 by 720 pixels) at 30 frames per second. The Flip Ultra HD also sports 8 GB of built-in memory and an HDMI port for connecting to an HDTV for sharing video. The Flip Ultra HD runs off rechargable AA batteries, but also accepts standards AA batteries; it should be a available now for $199.99 in either white or black.
Both Flip Ultras come with FlipShare software for PC and Macintosh that enables users to save and organize their videos, send video greeting cards, upload video directly to MySpace and YouTube, extract HD snapshots from videos, as well as create custom movies.
