Here’s your first official look at Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Ever since Ultron was announced as the villain of the upcoming sequel to The Avengers, there’s been no shortage of speculation regarding the form the robotic villain will take in the film. That question was answered this week with the character’s debut on a magazine cover — but Ultron wasn’t alone.

Ultron appears along with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) on the cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly as part of the magazine’s preview of Comic-Con International in San Diego, which kicks off next week. The trio is joined by an army of Ultron clones in the background of the image, offering some indication of the threat the Avengers will face this time around.

A close look at the cover also reveals a bit of playful tagging on the part of EW’s design team, with one of the Ultron clones offering up the line “Domo arigato” — a reference to the iconic Styx song “Mr. Roboto.”

Along with revealing the movie version of Ultron — set to be voiced by actor James Spader —  the cover image also features the debut of the new armor Tony Stark will be wearing as Iron Man, as well as yet another redesign of Captain America’s uniform. The latest Iron Man armor appears to have reverted back to the old, circular arc reactor in the center of Tony’s chest, while Captain America’s suit is decidedly more red, white, and blue this time around.

Over on EW’s website, there are a few more images from Avengers: Age of Ultron, including the photo below of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in her new superhero uniform (complete with larger, comics-style wrist armament), and new shots of returning characters Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who appears to be sporting a dramatically redesigned uniform. New characters Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) also appear in the photos.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon and hits theaters May 1, 2015.

YouTube brings picture-in-picture mode to everyone on mobile, and you don’t have to pay for it
Phone in hand showing YouTube logo

Well, it took long enough — but YouTube is finally doing something really nice for its free users. Picture-in-picture mode, the feature that lets you shrink a video into a floating mini-player while you go about your phone life, is rolling out globally to all users over the coming months — no subscription or premium paywall is required. Just you, your video, and the freedom to check your messages without the whole thing grinding to a halt. For anyone outside the US who has spent years watching Premium subscribers float their videos around like smug little royals, this one's for you.

The rollout covers longform, non-music content on both Android and iOS — and honestly, that caveat about music being Premium-only is fair enough. YouTube Music needs something to justify its existence.

The dreams of an uber-powerful and massive “iPad Ultra” have run into a wall
Electronics, Mobile Phone, Phone

Some product ideas sound brilliant on a whiteboard but fall apart the moment reality sets in. Apple's rumored iPad Ultra appears to be one of them.

According to prominent Weibo leaker Instant Digital, Apple has no plans to release an iPad Ultra — and when you look at the reasons why, it's hard to argue with the decision. The iPad Pro, which was supposed to be the premium, aspirational face of Apple's tablet lineup, has been bleeding sales for years. Three consecutive years of declining iPad revenue. Shipment forecasts were slashed in half. A 13-inch model that barely moved units in the back half of 2024. When your existing high-end iPad can't find enough buyers at $1,299, the business case for something even more expensive and extreme starts to look very shaky indeed. And yet, somewhere deep in Apple's labs, engineers apparently tried anyway.
