The news first broke on Twitter after Spot News uploaded an audio recording of a police scanner reporting the incident. “Louis Johnson … shot in the left side of the head,” read the tweet, which was subsequently retweeted 722 times.

King Louie shot to fame in his native Chicago as part of the local trap scene. In 2012, he was named by Spin Magazine as one of the rappers that made the city the “hottest hip-hop scene.” He is attributed as coining the term Chiraq, now the title of a major motion picture directed by Spike Lee. King Louie has vocally opposed the film, along with a number of other Chicago rappers.

Also known as King L, the rapper’s mixtapes include Drilluminati, Jeep Music, Tony, and Play Dat Again. He has also collaborated on tracks with other notable Chicago rappers including Chief Keef and Lil Herb. Kanye West first professed his admiration for Louie on his remix of Chief Keef’s hit song; I Don’t Like, which was featured on the GOOD Music compilation album, Cruel Summer.
