Quant E-Sportlimousine will test new battery tech (and the limits of the term ‘sport’)

Jeremy Clarkson famously tried to prove that sporty things are always better than non-sporty things with his TGV12 “sports train.”

Set to debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the Quant e-Sportlimousine could be the road-going equivalent of a high-performance locomotive.

Fans of automotive esoterica will remember that the Quant name was first attached to the NLV Quant by Koenigsegg, a styling model for a four-door model from the Swedish supercar-maker that debuted at the 2009 Geneva Show. It featured a new powertrain with the Star Trek-esque name of Flow Accumulator Energy Storage.

NLV Solar AG – the company behind the Quant – decided to go it alone in 2010 with another concept, this time powered by four electric motors and featuring a body sheathed in solar cells.

For 2014, NLV’s Nunzio La Vecchia has teamed up with a new company called nanoFLOWCell AG for a third attempt at a Quant green luxury car.

The specifications for the Quant e-Sportlimousine are about as arbitrary as the capitalization of its parent company’s name. It will be over 17 feet long, but will only have four seats. It will also be powered by flow-cell batteries.

The e-Sportlimousine’s creators say this will be the first automotive application for this type of battery technology, and that the car will serve as a battery-tech testbed.

While a new all-electric luxury car would be interesting to see, it seems more likely that the latest Quant will follow in the tire tracks of its two predecessors, and turn out to be nothing but vaporware.

For years, the company has faced criticism from buyers who wanted CarPlay support, but Rivian now believes AI assistants will eventually replace many of the functions drivers currently rely on through their phones.
