If you’re into throwing swords at your friends, then Nidhogg 2 is the game for you.
Competitive 2D jousting-racing game Nidhogg will be getting a sequel sometime next year, and with it comes a whole new look.
Nidhogg 2 will pretty much be the same game from 2014, but it will be ditching its super minimalist Atari 2600 graphics for something more vibrant and expressive. It will still, however, feature pixelated art that will be more reminiscent of a Super Nintendo game. Nidhogg 2 will introduce ten new levels, and bring back online multi-player along with a tournament mode.
Nidhogg is a competitive jousting-racing game. The goal is for each player to reach their opponent’s side of the screen before the other player does the same. The player on the left will try and run all the way to the right and vice-versa. Each player can try and kill the other, which will of course prevent them from reaching their goal. What this quickly turns into is a rock-paper-scissors grudge match. Players can throw their sword, dive-kick, or beat their opponents to death just to get passed them. It’s also possible to jump over and evade attacks, avoiding battle altogether. Nidhogg is one of those games that is easy to pick up but hard to master. Requiring fast reflexes and hard reads of your opponent’s actions, it can be played both for fun at parties or serious for tournament play.
Nidhogg was met with universal critical acclaim. It won the Independent Game Festival’s 2011 Nuovo Award, Indiecade 2013’s Game Design award, and currently sits at 81 on Metacritic.
Nidhogg 2 will be featured this weekend at TwitchCon in San Diego, California at the Indie District. The game is expected to come out sometime in 2017 for PC, with a possible PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release later.
