LG to hold event on May 1, could signal the U.S. arrival of the Optimus G Pro (Updated)

LG May 1 InvitationInterested to see something new from LG? Well, as luck would have it the firm has announced it will be holding an event in New York on May 1, but as to what it’s going to unveil on the day, we’re not sure. The invitation shows a microphone and a spotlit background, with the words, “Share the Genius” running through the center. Under this, it says, “Capture the Spotlight in True Brilliance.”

This is even more meaningless than usual, and we’re not even going to try and decipher it. The last time LG held a major event in New York – in September last year – it did so in conjunction with Qualcomm, and made the Optimus G official. The common assumption this time is the event will be for the U.S. launch of the Optimus G Pro, LG’s Galaxy Note 2-worrying smartphone/tablet hybrid. After all, LG has previously promised this would occur before the summer.

While it’ll be good news the device will finally see an official release outside Korea, if the event is for the Optimus G Pro, it’ll be difficult not to feel a twinge of disappointment. The reason is, it has already been announced and not only did we get some decent hands-on time with it during Mobile World Congress, but have since been able to treat it to a full-on review. Yes, the hardware was tuned for the Korean market, so there could be a few alterations, and of course, any new hardware is good; but holding an event for something we’ve seen several times over seems like overkill.

Quite how the Optimius G Pro fits in with the statements on the invitation we don’t know (the G stands for Genius, perhaps?), so there’s also the chance it’ll be something else entirely. As mentioned above, LG’s event will take place on May 1, and we’ll be bringing you all the news as it happens.

Updated on 04/23/13 at 05:00am by Andy: LG has confirmed its May 1 event will be for the U.S. launch of the Optimus G Pro, and has clarified what it means by, “Share the genius,” as according to a second invitation published by Engadget, the indie band Atlas Genius will be in attendance.
