At Mobile World Congress, LG made plenty of noise about the G Pro 2 and the G2 Mini, both of which made their first appearances prior to the show starting. However, these two devices weren’t the only new phones on display. LG also revealed the L Series 3, its third revision of the mid-range L Series.
Fittingly, there are three new L Series 3 models: The top-end L90, the mid-range L70, and the basic L40. We’re pleased to see LG has moved away from the unwieldy naming structure given to the previous generation, so we’ve been spared a phone named the L9 3.
The L90 is the highest spec phone in the range. It has a 4.7-inch display and is driven by a quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM. An 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of storage space, and a 2540mAh battery also feature. The screen resolution wasn’t mentioned in LG’s initial blog post, although some sources said it would have 960 x 540 pixels. This would be a step down from the Optimus L9 2, which has a 720p resolution.
Updated on 03-06-2014 by Andy: LG has sent out a new press release specifically related to the L90, confirming all the final specs. As expected, the 4.7-inch screen has a disappointing 960 x 540 pixel resolution. The phone also has a MicroSD card slot, a 1.3-megapixel front camera, and LG’s cool KnockCode software feature.
Moving on to the L70, the screen has been shrunk down to 4.5-inches, and the processor replaced by a 1.2GHz dual-core chip, again with 1GB of RAM. There’s 4GB of internal memory, a 5-megapixel camera, and a smaller 2100mAh battery onboard. Finally, the L40 has a 3.5-inch display, a 3-megapixel camera, a 1.2GHz dual-core chip, and 512MB of RAM.
All three L Series 3 smartphones have 3G connectivity and use Android 4.4 KitKat as their operating system. The phone’s design has been updated over the L Series 2 range, with a non-slip, mesh-look rear cover and a curvier body shell. LG is also producing a set of Quick Window covers for the phones.
LG hasn’t offered any final release dates, saying only the devices will be on sale around the world before the end of March. The L90 will be first out the gate, and it’ll reach the Russian Commonwealth by the end of this week, with other countries to follow.
