More Android Phones to Receive Multitouch Update

Add as a preferred source on Google

google-nexus-one3When Google released the multitouch update for the Nexus One, The main thing we wanted to know was what about the rest of the Android phones? Today, PCMag reported that the rest of the Google Android crew will be receiving the update known as “Android 2.1-Update 1” as soon as possible.

Last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las, Vegas, Motorola chief executive Sanjay Jha said that both the Motorola Droid and the Motorola Cliq will receive updates to Android 2.1 “as shortly as possible.” PC Mag also notes that Sprint announced on their official Twitter page in December that the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment phones will receive Android 2.1 updates during the first half of 2010. Guess what folks—it is the first half of 2010, so we can be expecting that pinch-to-zoom update real soon.

This will be a big update for most Android handsets and would allow all of the devices to have a touchscreen with multitouch capabilities. This brief report from PCMag also notes that Google will be releasing this update to manufacturers and not users—hence the lack of public notice.

Update: The Droid has received official multitouch support in Google Maps… not what we were expecting, but good enough..

The home screen on the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Google's Pixel 10 lineup has been out for a bit, and if you've been on the fence about switching to Android's gold standard, current discounts across Amazon make this the best time to buy. We're seeing up to 26% off across the entire Pixel family, including phones and accessories.

Why buy a Pixel right now?
Google has always built the Pixel line around one idea: the smartest possible Android experience. With the Pixel 10 series, that philosophy gets a significant upgrade thanks to deep Gemini AI integration: Google's most capable AI assistant to date. It handles everything from real-time call screening and live translation to on-device photo editing and natural-language search, and it does so more seamlessly than any other Android on the market.
Add in Google's reputation for exceptional cameras, clean software, and the longest OS update commitments of any Android manufacturer, and the Pixel 10 lineup makes a compelling case for itself even at full price. At these discounted prices, it's a genuinely hard argument to beat.
