Check out our full review of the Motorola Moto X smart phone.

At long last, we finally have official details of the highly anticipated Moto X phone. A product of a collaboration between Motorola and Google, the device is the first-ever to be entirely manufactured right here in the United States.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect:

Motorola Moto X touchless controlTouchless Control: The device boasts super responsiveness to users. It comes equipped with Touchless Control, which is a revolutionary new voice activation and control system for smartphones. Without ever touching your phone (even if it’s locked), you can call out “OK Google Now” and it will perform a number of tasks, like pull up directions or send a text.

Active Display: This feature does away with the flashing light that so many phones employ to let you know whether or not you have new information to check; instead, incoming messages simply appear on your screen. (More about this after our hands-on look at the phone.)

Motorola Moto X case colorsMoto Maker: What many users will truly appreciate is that the phone is the first to be designed by each user. We’re not talking about just picking your favorite color from a pre-determined, limited color palette, or sending your phone out to be blingified, Paris Hilton–style after the fact. Instead, when you order your phone, you use Motorola’s Moto Maker, an online studio that lets you choose the colors, and select details on the front, back, accents, wallpapers, and even the phone’s memory size. (To boot, the phone ships as quickly as just four days after placing your order.)

Design: Each phone has a curved back — we’ll let you know how comfy it actually feels — and a 4.7-inch screen. Accessories for the phone, including headphones (which can be customized to match the color you choose for your phone), speakers, cases, and docks, were creating in collaboration with SOL Republic, in a line called M4DE Motorola.

Availability: The phone will be first available in late August or early September in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America, and should be priced at about $200, with a two-year contract from AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular, and Verizon Wireless.

Be sure to check back soon for our in-depth, hands-on review of the device!

Snapchat+ includes several exclusive features, but few have generated as much curiosity as Snapchat Planets. Part of the app's Friend Solar System, it transforms your Best Friends list into a planetary ranking, assigning each of your top eight friends a planet based on how often you interact.

From Mercury, which represents your closest friend, to Neptune, which represents your eighth closest, the system offers a quick visual snapshot of your interactions. But what do the different planets actually mean, and how does Snapchat decide who gets which one?

In recent years, it's grown even more potent with new features like video messages, self-destructing voice messages, the ability to edit sent messages, and more. We even finally got an WhatsApp iPad app in May 2025.

There's no shortage of messaging apps out there. The past decade has given us more options than we know what to do with, largely because smartphones demanded something better than plain old SMS.

Both the App Store and the Play Store are packed with apps that promise to revolutionize the way we communicate. Most of them didn't make it. The truth is, a messaging app is only as good as the number of people using it, and most apps never cross that threshold.
