Samsung has announced it will be rolling out operating system upgrades for its Galaxy Tab Android tablets, updating their operating system from Android 2.2 “Froyo” to Android 2.3 “Gingerbread.” Samsung promises the upgrade will give users better performance and battery life, an improved and more-responsive user interface, and improved copy-and-paste functionality.

The Android 2.3 update will start this month in the UK and Scandinavia, then gradually roll out to other European markets, along with North America, southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the rest of the world on a region-by-region basis. The update will be available via Samsung’s Kies device management software, available for download from Samsung’s Web site. Samsung’s budget-oriented Android devices—the Ace, Fit, Gio, and mini—will also be receiving an update to Android 2.3.

The update applies to the existing 7-inch version of the Galaxy Tab; the upcoming 10.1-inch version will ship with Android 2.0 Honeycomb.

Samsung’s Gingerbread update for the Galaxy Tab was originally supposed to roll out last month, but was pulled (Vodafone says by Google) after an unspecified issue was found just after distribution began.

The feature is called Friend Solar System, though most people just call it Snapchat Planets. It takes your position in a friend’s Snapchat orbit and turns it into a planet. From Mercury to Neptune, these celestial bodies signify how close a person is to you.

In recent years, it's grown even more potent with new features like video messages, self-destructing voice messages, the ability to edit sent messages, and more. We even finally got an WhatsApp iPad app in May 2025.

There's no shortage of messaging apps out there. The past decade has given us more options than we know what to do with, largely because smartphones demanded something better than plain old SMS.

Both the App Store and the Play Store are packed with apps that promise to revolutionize the way we communicate. Most of them didn't make it. The truth is, a messaging app is only as good as the number of people using it, and most apps never cross that threshold.
