Samsung prepping an 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab?

South Korea’s Samsung is working hard to make its Galaxy Tab devices the leader in the non-iPad tablet market: the company says it has shipped more than 2 million of the 7-inch version since the devices went on sale in November, and just introduced a 10.1-inch version of the device. Now, Samsung is teasing that it may introduce another form factor to the Tab lineup, issuing invitations to an announcement at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Florida March 22 that read “What’s your Tab life?” followed by “78910.”

Since Samsung already offers 7- and 10-inch versions of the Galaxy Tab, the “78910” is being taken as a hint that the company plans to launch a third version with an 8.9-inch display. Samsung’s invitation merely reads “”Curious about the secret behind 78910? Come discover what the buzz is all about and join us on our journey as we experience a world of endless technological possibility. We’ll unveil our latest mobile products and innovations and explore the exciting new consumer lifestyles they make possible.”

Representatives of the CTIA trade show have apparently indicated a “significant” tablet announcement will be made at the show, but have offered no other details.

A third Samsung Galaxy Tab might be a smart move for the company, trying to hit a sweet spot with consumers who find the 7-inch version too small and the 10-inch version too bulky. However, Samsung has apparently been caught back on its heels by the just-announced Apple iPad 2, which comes in thinner than Samsung’s brand-new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab offering.
