The Killer (2023)

Movies about hitmen tend to imagine worlds where those hitmen are cold, calculating, and great at their jobs. David Fincher’s The Killer imagines what might happen if a hitman, who thought of himself as cool and calculating, was much clumsier than he believed himself to be.

A sly comedy about a man who is far more confident in his skills than he should be, The Killer is the ideal combination of thrilling and silly, and Michael Fassbender proves to be the perfect match for the tonal balance his director is trying to strike.

The Two Popes (2019)

An imaginative exercise, The Two Popes tells the story of a meeting between two popes, one who was serving as the pope and the other who would succeed him. Pope Benedict and Pope Francis argue inside the Vatican about the future of the church, how the world is changing, and how they can best change with it.

Anchored by two brilliant central performances from Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes is fundamentally a series of conversations. Thanks to the beauty of the sets and the philosophical questions, it never feels leaden or stiff.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)

Wes Anderson is one of the most singular directors working consistently in modern Hollywood, and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is one of his more underseen films. The film tells the story of Henry Sugar, a man with inherited wealth who becomes obsessed with mastering a singular sort of vision that will allow him to become a master gambler.

Anderson is best known as a director who builds ornate images, and Henry Sugar is filled with those. With Benedict Cumberbatch at its center, though, Henry Sugar also becomes the kind of Anderson project that feels like it has a genuine soul, and it’s that combination that makes it so remarkable.

Harry Potter TV series’ first trailer is out and it feels like a replay I didn’t ask for
HBO had a chance to reinvent Harry Potter, but this feels like a visual rerun.

Well, HBO has finally dropped the first trailer for its Harry Potter TV series, set to premiere this Christmas, and it brings you right back to the beginning. That's broadly the only source of a vague intrigue for me, and I'm being generous here. Yes, it sets the stage for what should be a bold reinterpretation of the Harry Potter world. The trailer, however, settles for a safe, almost unimaginative retread.

Alright, so what am I looking at?
