Up until this point, anyone wondering what Paul Bettany’s android character Vision would look like in Avengers: Age of Ultron had to rely on promotional images and a blink-and-you-miss-it moment at the end of one of the trailers. Some of that mystery has now been removed, however, with the debut of a new clip, in which Iron Man, Thor, and the rest of the team seem to have their first encounter with Vision.
The clip appeared on a recent episode of The One Show on BBC (spotted by Comic Book Resources), and features Bettany as Vision making an explosive entrance that sends Thor (Chris Hemsworth) reeling. After assessing the situation, he attacks Thor, only to be thrown to the other side of the room. When he recovers, he finds himself gazing out at massive cityscape, and floats in the air while looking through a window at the lights of the city below him.
“Vision was fun. I loved playing him,” said Bettany of the character he’s been tasked with bringing into Marvel cinematic’s universe. “You get to see him born on screen, which I will never get to do again — I hope. And he’s supremely powerful and omnipotent and yet totally naive and experiencing the world as it comes and wondering if he’s going to be a force for good or evil.”
As for his character’s connection to Ultron, the evil android bent on eradicating humanity from the planet, Bettany offered a few teasing details, but couldn’t say more about that aspect of the film or how it relates to the role he played in previous Marvel movies: the voice of Tony Stark’s artificially intelligent assistant, J.A.R.V.I.S.
“They’re sort of two sides of the same coin,” said Bettany of Vision’s relationship with Ultron. “And there is a link between J.A.R.V.I.S. — who I used to play and still play in this movie — and the Vision, but I’m not allowed to say what it is.”
Directed by Joss Whedon, the sequel to the most successful superhero movie of all time pits Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and a cast of new and returning characters against the powerful android Ultron (voiced by James Spader) in a cataclysmic battle for the fate of the human race.
Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters May 1, 2015.
