Since the debut of Yellowstone in 2018, the series has grown into one of Paramount’s biggest television franchises, spawning multiple prequels that explore different chapters of the Dutton family’s history. The first of those, 1883, premiered in 2021 and quickly became a hit in its own right, introducing audiences to the generation that first journeyed west to lay the foundations of the Yellowstone Ranch.

Set decades before Yellowstone, the series follows James and Margaret Dutton, played by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, as they travel across the American frontier alongside Shea Brennan, portrayed by Sam Elliott. Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, and Audie Rick round out the main cast in a story that was always intended to tell the origins of the Dutton family.

Even though 1883 concluded in 2022, questions about a second season continue to surface. Part of the confusion stems from early reports about the show’s future and the rapid expansion of the Yellowstone universe. Taylor Sheridan has since clarified his plans for the series, and here’s everything we know about the future of 1883 and why a traditional season 2 isn’t expected.

Wasn’t 1883 Renewed?

Yes, and that’s where much of the confusion began. In February 2022, Paramount announced that more episodes of 1883 were in development following the show’s success. At the time, many viewers assumed that meant a traditional second season was on the way.

Taylor Sheridan later explained that 1883 had always been conceived as a complete story with a definitive ending. Rather than continuing the same narrative, Paramount shifted its focus to expanding the Yellowstone universe with new prequels and companion series, including 1923. While 1883 won’t receive a traditional sequel, the story of the Dutton family continues through the Yellowstone universe rather than another season of the series itself.

Although 1883 is a standalone story, it marks the beginning of the Dutton family saga. Viewers looking to continue the timeline should watch 1923 next before moving on to Yellowstone.

Is 1883 getting a second season?

No. Despite early reports suggesting that more episodes were in development, Taylor Sheridan has consistently maintained that 1883 was conceived as a complete story with a definitive ending. Rather than continuing the series with a traditional second season, Paramount chose to expand the Yellowstone universe through other prequels, including 1923, which follows the next chapter of the Dutton family’s story.

Although 1883 tells a complete story, it also serves as the starting point for the Yellowstone saga. If you’re watching the franchise in chronological order, 1923 is the next stop before the timeline eventually reaches Yellowstone.

What did Taylor Sheridan say about the future of 1883?

Sheridan told Deadline that the story was complete with 1883 season 1, and he has no intention of continuing it.

“I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey,” said Sheridan. “I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily after, or didn’t. I’d rather you imagine it, and wonder what Thomas and Noemi made of their lives. You never get to see how James and Margaret move on. You did seem them in a flashback as having moved on, and so that’s what I cared to explore. On to the next peek through the window. I also wanted to create something you could watch and be completely enthralled and fulfilled, having never seen Yellowstone. Let it live on its own merits.”

“For me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended,” added Sheridan. “I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then.”

Is Lawmen: Bass Reeves an 1883 spinoff?

As noted in this report from Deadline, Lawmen: Bass Reeves was originally going to be an 1883 spinoff called 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. However, Lawmen: Bass Reeves was eventually reconceived as its own franchise, although Sheridan produces both series. It is not an 1883 spinoff, and it doesn’t share continuity with the previous show.

Will there be a sequel to 1883?

While 1883 won’t receive a direct sequel, that doesn’t mean the story of the Dutton family ends there. Instead of continuing the series with another season, Taylor Sheridan chose to expand the Yellowstone universe through new stories set in different eras, allowing the family’s history to unfold across multiple shows.

The next chapter arrives in 1923, which follows a new generation of Duttons as they navigate Prohibition, drought, and the challenges of the early 20th century. Although it isn’t a direct continuation of 1883, it builds on the family’s legacy and serves as the next stop in the Yellowstone timeline.

Unlike 1883, there is a second season of 1923 and it was aired in 2025. However, this arc has also ended here and there isn’t going to be any further seasons to 1923.

What to watch after 1883

Although 1883 tells a complete story, it also serves as the starting point for the Yellowstone saga. If you’re following the franchise in chronological order, 1923 is the next series to watch before moving on to Yellowstone.

If you’re more interested in release order, Yellowstone remains the central series, with 1883 and 1923 expanding different chapters of the Dutton family’s history.
