Fear (1996)

Mark Wahlberg is an Academy Award-nominated actor. In 1996, Wahlberg was desperately trying to shed his “Marky Mark” persona. So, he went to Hollywood and starred as the villain in Fear, a psychological thriller about a family under fire. Teenager Nicole Walker (Reese Witherspoon) falls in love with the older David McCall (Wahlberg).

To Nicole and most of her family, David is a nice guy with a good heart. To Nicole’s father (William Petersen), David is a menace. Turns out Dad was right, as David exudes psychopathic tendencies to be with Nicole. Fear is a little campy and ridiculous, but Wahlberg’s commitment and Witherspoon’s charm make for an entertaining thriller.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

With One Battle After Another now in theaters, it’s only right to honor Anderson with one of his earlier releases. After Magnolia, Anderson could have made anything he wanted, so he recruited Adam Sandler to star in the unconventional rom-com, Punch-Drunk Love. Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a business owner with social anxiety that leads to violent blowups.

Barry begins to open up his heart when he meets his sister’s co-worker, Lena Leonard (Emily Watson). However, an extortion plot threatens to ruin Barry’s budding relationship with Lena. Anderson deserves a ton of credit for casting Sandler, who perfectly captures male loneliness in a career-changing performance.

Stream Punch-Drunk Love on Pluto TV.

The Natural: The Best There Ever Was (2015)

On September 16, the world lost an icon, Robert Redford, who died at the age of 89. Redford is one of the most legendary stars to ever grace the big screen. He’s best known for his work in the ’70s, but in 1984, Redford grabbed a bat and played baseball player Roy Hobbs in The Natural.

The Barry Levinson sports drama might be the greatest baseball movie ever made. The Best There Ever Was is a documentary about the making of The Natural, featuring interviews with Redford and the majority of the cast. It’s a fascinating look into an all-time movie.

Harry Potter TV series’ first trailer is out and it feels like a replay I didn’t ask for
HBO had a chance to reinvent Harry Potter, but this feels like a visual rerun.
hbo-harry-potter-tv-series

Well, HBO has finally dropped the first trailer for its Harry Potter TV series, set to premiere this Christmas, and it brings you right back to the beginning. That's broadly the only source of a vague intrigue for me, and I'm being generous here. Yes, it sets the stage for what should be a bold reinterpretation of the Harry Potter world. The trailer, however, settles for a safe, almost unimaginative retread.

Alright, so what am I looking at?
