The next James Bond movie has a title, a cast, and a fancy new car.
In a live, streaming event, Albert R. Broccoli’s EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that the upcoming, 24th installment of the James Bond franchise is titled Spectre and revealed the primary cast of the film. Director Sam Mendes also shared a first look at the suped-up car that the famous British super-spy will drive in the film.
Along with returning cast members Rory Kinnear (as Tanner), Ben Whishaw (Q), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny), Ralph Fiennes (M), and of course, Daniel Craig (James Bond), the cast of Spectre expands to include Sherlock‘s Moriarty actor Andrew Scott as Denbigh, David Bautista as Mr. Hinx (rumored to be a henchman role), Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, and Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann.
During the event, actor Christoph Waltz was also confirmed as a new addition to the cast, but Mendes declined to name the character the two-time Oscar-winner plays in the film. Spectre‘s social media feeds subsequently identified Waltz’s character as “Oberhauser,” a possible reference to the character Hannes Oberhauser who appeared in several of Ian Fleming novels, but speculation still points to Waltz playing the iconic villain Blofeld.
“Those of you who have some knowledge of the Bond franchise and the legend of Bond will probably have some idea what that refers to,” said Mendes in reference to the film’s title, “but I couldn’t possibly comment.”
In previous Bond films and Fleming’s novels, SPECTRE is a criminal organization that opposes Bond and MI-6, and it’s run by diabolical genius Ernst Stavro Blofeld. The organization appeared in multiple films and novels, and its debut in the modern Bond franchise has been a long-awaited element for fans.
Along with confirming the title and cast, Mendes also revealed the car Bond will be driving in Spectre: an impressive Aston Martin DB10.
Spectre is expected to begin filming in December 2014, with a scheduled premiere on November 6, 2015.
