Sigourney Weaver to ‘transform’ for Avatar sequels

It’s been public knowledge for a while now that Sigourney Weaver is expected to return for the sequels to Avatar despite her character’s demise in the 2009 film, but what form her return will take has been a little less certain — and some recent comments from the actress only add to the mystery.

Speaking to Vulture, Weaver said her character will “transform” for each iteration of the three sequels being filmed back-to-back by James Cameron.

“It will be challenging for me,” said Weaver. “I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one. . . . I’ll transform somewhat.”

The first film in the franchise, Avatar, remains the highest grossing film of all time, and the three sequels Cameron is filming are currently scheduled to hit theaters each year beginning December 2016. Along with bringing Weaver and stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington back for the upcoming films, Cameron will also shoot each of the films in the high-definition 4K resolution and utilize a similar 48fps filming technique As Peter Jackson did for his trilogy of The Hobbit movies.

“It’s going to be an adventure!” said Weaver of the demands of the impending three-film schedule. “It will be awesome. I can’t even imagine what I am taking on —  and what James Cameron is taking on — with filming three Avatars at once, but … Peter Jackson did it with the Hobbit films, so we have that to look to.”

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters December 2016.
