One of the big surprises to come out of the 2014 movie calendar was The Lego Movie, which earned more than $469 million worldwide, received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and had its theme song nominated for an Academy Award. The sequel to that film has been in development for a while now, and the latest update on it is an interesting one.
Now that original directors and co-writers of The Lego Movie have moved on to helm the upcoming Han Solo movie for the Star Wars franchise, the studio has reportedly turned to Raphael Bob-Waksberg, creator of the animated series BoJack Horseman, to work on the latest draft of the script.
According to The Wrap, the script for The Lego Movie sequel will be Bob-Waksberg’s first feature project. He’ll be working off a script initially penned by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who co-wrote and directed the first film before agreeing to direct the still-untitled Han Solo movie for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Community and Monster House director Rob Schrab is attached to direct The Lego Movie sequel, with Lord and Miller serving as producers along with original Lego Movie producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee.
Plot details are scarce at this point, but The Lego Movie sequel is expected to bring back Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks as the voices of lead characters Emmett and Wyldstyle, respectively. Lord and Miller previously indicated that the sequel will take place four years after the events of the 2014 film, and could involve the human boy, Finn (played by Jadon Sand), who played a role in the original movie.
The sequel was initially scheduled to hit theaters in May 2018, but was recently pushed back to a new release date of February 8, 2019.
