The season finale of Marvel’s WandaVision is behind us now, and the conclusion of the Disney+ series’ first season managed to resolve plenty of lingering questions while posing quite a few more.
With The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — premiering March 19 on Disney+ and Wanda’s return confirmed in March 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there’s plenty of time to ponder where the end of WandaVision leaves Wanda, Vision, and their supporting cast, and what could be in store for them. However, with the WandaVision finale still freshly arrived on Disney+, it’s more important than ever to push that conversation after a spoiler warning.
Make sure you’ve seen the final episode of WandaVision before reading on, Marvel fans.
Now that we have that warning out of the way, here are some of the most important things we know about Wanda, Vision, and the MCU after WandaVision, and some of the biggest questions we still have.
What about the mutants?
The final episode of WandaVision didn’t provide the X-Men introduction many pundits (and fans) predicted, and instead, it pulled a bit of a tease with Evan Peters’ Quicksilver, revealing that he wasn’t actually the character from the X-Men films and was, in fact, just some guy. It turned out that Agnes’ mysterious husband, Ralph, did exist — but the mystery man wasn’t much of a mystery in the end. If you’re mourning what might have been if Peters’ celebrated spin on Quicksilver joined the MCU, you’re not alone.
It’s worth noting that Marvel president Kevin Feige has confirmed an X-Men project is indeed in the works, though, so some form of the X-Men will eventually debut in the MCU. It just won’t happen as soon as many fans were hoping.
Double Vision
Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) might have been forced to say goodbye to the Vision (Paul Bettany) she recreated in Westview, but WandaVision found a clever way to ensure we haven’t seen the last of the charming synthezoid. After the Westview Vision restored the white, weaponized Vision’s memories right up to the moment he’s killed by Thanos, the latter came to the realization that he is now, in fact, Vision — and then flew off to parts unknown. That leaves the door wide open for Vision to return to action, right after he’s finished with what begs to be referred to as a “Vision quest.”
New suit, who dis
WandaVision did a wonderful job of toying with fans’ expectations over the course of nine episodes, teasing them with bargain-store versions of each characters’ classic, Marvel Comics costumes in the Halloween-themed episode and hinting at some witchy-ness in Wanda’s background (and future). Although it wouldn’t have been surprising if those teases never amounted to anything, Marvel opted to go the other way with them, and give fans a full-on transformation into The Scarlet Witch in the finale — complete with a comics-accurate costume.
Fans have wanted to Wanda Maximoff go full witch since she was introduced, and the finale episode delivered the payoff. The next big team-up moment in the MCU is going to look a lot different with this Scarlet Witch in the lineup.
It’s Rambeau time
Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) has gone by a lot of superhero names in Marvel Comics lore, including Photon, Pulsar, and even Captain Marvel for a while. One thing that seems certain after watching her first gain her powers, then learn to use them in WandaVision, is that we’re going to see a lot more of her. Not only does the series establish her as an extremely powerful new hero in the MCU — she shrugged off some of Wanda’s blasts, after all — the finale’s mid-credits scene suggests that she’s on the radar of a mysterious character (who is almost certainly Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury).
While that’s all well and good, the biggest question might be what will happen when Rambeau finally encounters Captain Marvel herself, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). WandaVision made it clear that there’s plenty of tension between those characters, and there’s no chance they’ll be able to avoid each other forever.
What about the kids?
Wanda and Vision’s farewell to their children — who turned out to be constructs of Wanda’s vast illusion — might be one of the most heartbreaking moments in the MCU so far (and that includes Yondu and Groot’s tear-jerking goodbyes, so it’s saying a lot). And although we know few things are certain in comics, the final post-credits scene in WandaVision suggests that we could see Billy and Tommy again, with the help of some seemingly dark, ominous magic.
Seeing the pair again would make sense, too, as Marvel Comics history has already established Billy and Tommy as the young superheroes known as Wiccan and Speed. In WandaVision, the pair even wore costumes similar to their comics counterparts in the aforementioned Halloween episode, so the precedent has already been set.
The Doctor and the prophecy
At one point during the final episode of WandaVision, Agatha “Agnes” Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) mentions that The Scarlet Witch has power that exceeds that of The Sorcerer Supreme, and that she’s destined to destroy the world. The latter part of the statement will probably come into play down the road, particularly when she encounters The Sorcerer Supreme himself, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That’s probably going to be awkward.
R.I.P. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The run of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. might be over, but WandaVision offered a nice reminder that the show introduced some pretty important pieces to the MCU puzzle. That creepy book Agatha refers to as the Darkhold, for example, first entered the MCU in an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and has been apparently circulating around the dimensional planes before ending up in Agatha’s hands. The book was widely regarded as a pretty dangerous object of occult power, so it’s probably not a great sign that Wanda is holed up in a remote cabin obsessing over it, the last we see her.
What’s next?
Given how things end up in the finale, it’s highly unlikely there will be a second season of WandaVision — the episode was titled The Series Finale, after all — no matter how much we want to see more of the titular pair’s sitcom life (or any life, really, as long as they’re together). The next chapter of the MCU kicks off March 19 with the aforementioned The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series on Disney+, while Wanda is confirmed to be returning for the Marvel Studios feature Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in March 2022. Between those two projects, a long list of Marvel movies and series are on the calendar, so anything could happen.
