The OnePlus 8 Series of smartphones will be launched on April 14, according to an announcement. As expected, the launch will take place online, and will be available to watch at 11 a.m. ET and 8 a.m. PT. The official invitation image includes the tagline “Lead with Speed,” and in the release says the launch will usher in “the dawn of a true 5G flagship lineup.”

OnePlus 8 Series - Coming April 14

The announcement came several hours after OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau tweeted that the company had pushed back the OnePlus 8 launch three times due to concern about how the ongoing coronavirus, formally known as COVID-19, is affecting the world. Lau wrote the OnePlus 8 Series has been worked on for more than a year by 2,000 people. He added that “we are all keeping a close eye on ongoing developments. But as we take every step to safeguard the health of our staff and community and rise to meet the current challenges, we do so with hope for a better and safer future.”

What should we expect from the OnePlus 8? With the use of the word Series, it seems that once again we will be introduced to a OnePlus 8 and a OnePlus 8 Pro, and there are repeated rumors that a new version will also arrive, potentially called the OnePlus 8 Lite or OnePlus 8 Z. This model may cost less than the OnePlus 8, and should it be called the Z, it may well act as a spiritual successor to the 2015 OnePlus X.

The OnePlus 8 Pro has had its fair share of rumors and leaks too. It’s possible the phone will have a big 6.77-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a quad-camera setup on the back led by two 48-megapixel sensors, be IP68 water resistant, and have wireless charging, too. The smaller OnePlus 8’s screen may only shrink to 6.55-inches, and it will likely have a three-lens camera on the back. The range may get some beautiful colors, too, including a green and one called “interstellar glow,” which reminds us of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus’ stunning aura glow color.

What we do know, based on the press details sent out so far, is that at least two of the new phones will have 5G and have been confirmed to feature 120Hz refresh rate screens again. OnePlus also says the phones will have “a handful of other new and exciting technologies that will elevate the OnePlus flagship experience to a new level.” All will be revealed on April 14.

I won’t buy the Galaxy A37 at $450, but I strongly recommend these 4 terrific options
The Galaxy A37 5G isn't a bad phone, it's just surrounded by better ones that cost less and refuse to let you overpay for a mediocre smartphone.

Samsung launched the Galaxy A37 5G at $449.99 for the baseline variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The smartphone is $50 more expensive than its predecessor, and to me, it looks like the premium is going straight into tackling the rise in component cost due to the ongoing memory crisis rather than providing meaningful upgrades.

There are plenty of things that could justify the price hike on paper. For instance, the chipset upgrade, Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 to Exynos 1480, provides a low double-digit improvement in performance, which is barely noticeable for regular users. The phone sports a slightly higher HDR brightness (1900 nits vs. 1700 nits) and a better IP rating (IP68 vs. IP67).

Apple says Lockdown Mode thwarted spyware attacks with a clean slate
Apple’s strongest defense is actually holding up

Apple says it has not seen a successful spyware attack on any iPhone with Lockdown Mode enabled, a claim it shared with TechCrunch.

Lockdown Mode arrived in 2022 as an opt-in feature for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It was introduced as a stricter security mode for people at high risk of targeted attacks, such as journalists, activists, and government officials.

The Dynamic Island could shrink on the iPhone 18 series, and not just on the Pro models
One leaker, one claim, and a big question: is Apple genuinely ready to give every iPhone buyer the same design treatment as Pro owners this cycle?

Apple’s Dynamic Island has been around long enough that most people have made their peace with it or forgotten it’s there. In fact, I’ve seen people associating the pill-shaped notch with newer iPhone models (released in the last 3 years). Now, a fresh leak suggests that the notch replacement is about to shrink, not just on the expensive models.

What did the leaker actually say?
