PORTLAND, ORE. – AUG. 26, 2014 – Digital Trends, a leading consumer technology publisher, today announced it launched a wearables category page dedicated to product reviews, breaking news, and commentary about wearable devices. A new column titled “Wear Next” will be published every Monday to help consumers weigh their wearables options.

Digital Trends already features in-depth reporting on the wearables space, which will live in the new ‘Wearables’ category under the drop-down ‘News’ menu on the Digital Trends site.

Wearables coverage is led by Deputy Editor Jeffrey Van Camp, with Staff Writer Malarie Gokey and contributors Andy Boxall, Trevor Mogg, and Simon Hill providing daily reporting. Brian Heater will pen “Wear Next.” Heater is the former director of media at Engadget, and Spin, PC Magazine, and other publications have featured his work.

“With promising upstarts on Kickstarter and Indiegogo rivaling even the biggest brands – we’re looking at you, Apple and Samsung – the wearable space is exploding,” said Digital Trends Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Kaplan. “Digital Trends separates the nonsense from the genius, helping you get the best bang for your buck.”

Wearables is one of the fastest-growing categories in tech. Shipments of wearable devices will grow 129 percent in 2014 as new products come to market and sales of existing wearables – mainly fitness trackers and smartwatches – grow, according to analyst firm CCS Insight’s new global forecast.

Wearable shipments will hit 22 million next year, up from 9.7 million in 2013, and will continue to grow to 135 million in 2018. Cumulative sales of wearable technology over the next five years are projected to reach 370 million, according to the report.

Digital Trends has become an industry authority and go-to resource on all things wearable. Editor-in-Chief Kaplan is slated to moderate a panel at the Wearables + Things Conference Oct. 20 – 21 in Washington, D.C. and will join the judging panel for FashioNXT’s first annual Wearable Technology Fashion Competition Oct. 8 – 11 in Portland, Ore.

The wearables space encompasses devices including smartwatches, eyewear like Google Glass, wearable cameras, fitness trackers, smart clothing, virtual reality headsets like Oculus Rift, and wearable health devices currently under development that will monitor glucose levels to help people manage diabetes, for example.
