Blend in peace with Millo, an ‘air drive’ blender that’s easier on the ears

You may be able to squeeze juice out of a packet, but you can’t squeeze smoothie out of a few pieces of fruit. But don’t fret — Millo will do it for you, and promises to do so more quietly than any blender before it. The self-proclaimed “smartest smoothie maker” wants to help you get your daily fruit and vegetable serving without raising a ruckus.

“It’s a blender, not a hammer drill,” the Millo team reminds us on its Kickstarter page. “Neither should it sound like one.” Thanks to this blender’s Air Drive system, it doesn’t. Rather than dealing with loud motors and rattling blade connectors, the uses a brushless electric motor with 1,500 watts of power. With blades that spin at up to 16,000 times per minutes, you can rest assured that what the Millo lacks in noise it makes up for in power. By using magnets to deliver power to the blade, you end up with a blender that is as good for your taste buds as it is for your ears.

But aside from being quiet, the Millo offers a few other 21st century innovations. Promising a Smart Lid that does not require careful cleaning in little crevices, you can instead just rinse this blender and be on your merry way. If you’re really pressed for time, the Smart Lid can even double as a cover so you can just take your whole blender with you on the go (it can fit in standard cup holders).

Rather than having to fiddle with various buttons and presets, Millo instead operates via touch. Just tap the base and control the power by sliding your finger along the edge. Of course, you generally shouldn’t even have to set the blender yourself, as Millo comes with a companion app with various recipes that all have blender settings predetermined. Plus, you can use the app to track nutrition data.

As it stands, Millo is hoping to raise a little more than $100,000 from its Kickstarter campaign and is presently about 20 percent of the way there. If you would like to help, you can pre-order a Millo for the super early bird price of $330, with an estimated delivery date of March.

Amazon’s Echo Hub just became the control freak your smart home needed
The Amazon Echo Hub showing the main screen.

Smart homes are supposed to make life easier. In reality, they often leave you juggling half a dozen apps just to dim the lights, check who’s at the front door, and figure out why the thermostat suddenly thinks you’re living in the Arctic.

That’s the problem Amazon’s Echo Hub has always tried to solve. It’s essentially a dedicated touchscreen for your connected home, bringing your lights, cameras, locks, thermostats, alarms, and routines into one place. Now, Amazon is giving that experience a significant refresh with a redesigned interface that feels like the smart home dashboard many people have been waiting for. The update is rolling out as a free software upgrade for existing Echo Hub owners, and while it doesn’t change the hardware itself, it may make the device much more useful day to day.
