Watch footage from three pro divers shot entirely with Snapchat Spectacles

Add as a preferred source on Google

Snapchat’s Spectacles offer an easy way to shoot POV photos — and now that capability could extend underwater. Royal Caribbean recently developed a pair of Spectacles-compatible underwater goggles called SeaSeekers and will share snaps from dives with three well-known divers on their Snapchat June 21-25.

The cruise company will begin posting Spectacles snaps from three underwater treks on the first official day of summer. The Spectacles’ 10-second videos will include conservationist Robert Ochoa’s underwater view in Cozumel, Mexico, of the annual Whale Shark migration; marine biologist Gabriela Nava’s exploration of a coral reef restoration project; and free diver Ashleigh Baird’s dive down in a large underwater sinkhole in Belize called the Great Blue Hole. The Spectacles shots will be posted by @RoyalCaribbean with the hashtag #SeekDeeper.

For now, Spectacles fans will have to settle for just experiencing the dives vicariously. Royal Caribbean has applied for a patent for the goggles and plans to offer them as an exclusive for their cruise customers. The specially designed Goggles allow users to access the camera glasses controls while keeping the electronics dry underwater.

“The SeaSeeker will enable all adventure-seekers to get a front-row seat to the thrilling adventures found underwater in a way that has never been possible before,” Jim Berra, chief marketing officer and SVP of Marketing, Royal Caribbean International, said in a press release. “Snapchat continues to be a favorite channel for curious travelers and is the ideal platform for this first-of-its-kind undersea exploration. We are excited to find an innovative way to use the Snapchat Spectacles with our SeaSeeker mask so that we can bring the underwater experience to our guests as they visit the incredible destinations we sail to.”

Along with serving as a promotion for the cruises, the goggles were also developed both as a way to explore the oceans, which still remain 95 percent unexplored, and as a way to promote conservation.

Along with being posted on Snapchat, the underwater content will also be shared on other social media channels, which users can find by searching for the hashtag #SeekDeeper.
