Notta’s Bot-Free mode is quietly changing how professionals record and transcribe meetings — no interruptions, no waiting, no awkward “who invited that?”

If you’ve ever used an AI meeting assistant, you know the moment. You’re mid-sentence, the agenda is finally moving, and then — a bot joins. Everyone pauses. Someone asks “did you invite a recorder?”  This standard method of joining requires visible acknowledgement of the transcription process.

Notta’s desktop users now have a new option for seamless recording: its latest ‘Bot-Free’ feature eliminates the awkward moment of a bot joining the meeting entirely.

Zero Presence, Maximum Focus

Most AI transcription tools work by sending a virtual participant into your meeting. This method is effective and remains crucial for broad compatibility across web browsers, mobile, and other cross-platform environments. However, this visible method requires the bot to join and be recognized. The bot needs time to join, and the presence of any third-party participant can sometimes lead to attendee hesitation in sensitive discussions.

Bot-Free takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of joining your meeting, Notta Desktop captures audio directly from your operating system — your microphone and your system audio simultaneously — using native APIs built into macOS and Windows. The result is a recording that starts the moment you click, with zero presence in the meeting itself.

The meeting stays focused on what matters — not on who else is in the room.

How It Actually Works

On macOS, Notta uses Apple’s ProcessTap API (available on macOS 14.4 and above) to tap directly into system audio streams without requiring screen recording permissions. On older macOS versions and Windows, it falls back to ScreenCaptureKit and WASAPI Loopback respectively — both native OS-level solutions. For Windows (10 and above, x64 architecture), it utilizes WASAPI Loopback, a native OS-level solution, which captures system audio without requiring any additional permissions.

What makes this technically interesting is the dual-channel approach. Your microphone feeds into the left channel. Everything playing through your speakers — your colleagues’ voices — feeds into the right. This separation enables more accurate speaker identification in the transcript, since the system always knows which voice is yours and which voices belong to everyone else.

Before any audio reaches Notta’s transcription pipeline, it passes through WebRTC’s audio processing stack: echo cancellation and noise suppression. The kind of processing that used to require dedicated hardware now runs invisibly in the background.

It Knows When You’re in a Meeting

Bot-Free doesn’t wait for you to remember to hit record. Running quietly in the background, Notta Desktop detects when you’ve joined a meeting and sends a notification asking if you’d like to start transcribing. One click, and it’s running — no digging through menus, no missed first five minutes.

Instant. Compatible. Private.

Three things stand out in practice.

First, speed. There’s no waiting for a bot to negotiate access, request permissions, and join the call. Recording starts immediately.

Second, compatibility. Because Bot-Free works at the OS level rather than through platform APIs, it works with literally any meeting software — Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Slack, Discord, or any browser-based call. If your computer can hear it, Notta can transcribe it.

Third, privacy. Audio captured in Bot-Free mode never passes through a third-party bot server. It goes from your machine directly to Notta’s transcription service over an encrypted connection. For legal, medical, financial, or executive conversations where confidentiality matters, this distinction is significant.

The Quiet Upgrade

What’s notable about Bot-Free isn’t that it does something radically new — transcription has existed for years. It’s that it removes the last remaining reason professionals hesitate to use AI meeting tools in the first place.

Your meetings are already being forgotten. Now there’s finally a way to remember them — without anyone knowing you’re trying.
