Infiniti president: cool concept cars are on hold, company will focus on more practical vehicles

Infiniti Emerg-E Concept Shooting for a more practical approach to increasing sales, it appears that Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen will be tabling plans for a lot of the luxury carmaker’s high-concept vehicles.

So, it looks like anything Infiniti might have been remotely working on close to the hot Emerg-E hybrid concept (pictured above) that debuted at the 2012 Geneva show, will remain just that − a concept.

Instead, De Nysschen said Infiniti will focus on more practical cars rather than higher performance models and electric vehicles, according an Automotive News report.

In addition, he said the luxury carmaker is dialing back a bit on earlier expectations that the brand will nearly triple its sales in four years. De Nysschen, who was appointed head of Infiniti last summer, also wants to take a much more conservative approach to the sports-car concepts the carmaker has showcased at recent auto shows.

Still, de Nysschen told Automotive News that he remains committed to quickly growing sales, which is why he wants to focus on higher volume models.

Part of the plan to meet those goals includes new investments into starting Infiniti production in China and England and ramping up for the launch of more volume nameplates such as an entry-level compact to debut in 2015, AN said.

The cars, expected by 20120, will be “high-performance luxury cars, not a sports car,” said de Nysschen, as reported by Automotive News.

“It will be more Porsche Panamera-like than BMW 7 series-like,” he said. “We could then quite conceivably use the same platform to create a more compact 2+2, two-door coupe that could perhaps just dial up the performance and design appeal.”

What it won’t be, de Nysschen said, is a “true thoroughbred sports car” which many were hoping the Emerg-E hybrid concept might have been leading up to – at least down the road.

More range, more interior, more spec, for less money than a Tesla Model 3. Just not in the US yet.
Machine, Wheel, Car

The Tesla Model 3 has spent years defining what a premium and functional EV should cost; that’s what we’re used to. However, BYD seems to think that number is way too high.

The Chinese automaker has unveiled a new flagship sedan, the Seal 08, that packs features you don’t normally expect from cars in this segment, blurring the line between affordable and luxury. And after reading its entire spec sheet, it’s actually the price that shakes me the most.

A stolen Kia reveals the hidden limits of connected car technology
Kia can see where your stolen car is. GDPR means it won't share that in real time. That is the entire problem.
Kia EV3 design

If you’re buying a car with connected car technology, thinking it would help you to recover it in the event of theft, you might want to recalibrate your expectations.

A recent incident in the UK, in which a car owner had three tracking devices installed in his car and still couldn’t recover it, led the carmaker to state that connected-car technology isn’t a “certified security vehicle tracker” (via the BBC).
