Mercedes gets serious about electric cars with Generation EQ concept

Almost exactly one year ago, at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled the e-tron quattro concept, a preview of an all-electric SUV it plans to launch in 2018. Now, at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is firing back with an electric SUV concept of its own.

The Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ concept rides on a new dedicated platform for electric cars that will eventually underpin multiple models. Mercedes says the modular platform is flexible enough to accommodate everything from convertibles to SUVs. It’s Mercedes’ attempt to match its German rivals, not to mention Tesla Motors.

In addition to previewing a new platform, the Generation EQ previews styling that will be used to set future Mercedes electric cars apart from their gasoline and diesel counterparts. What the carmaker calls its “electro look” is defined by a panel of lighting elements that takes the place of a conventional grille. The vehicle itself has a sleeker design than traditional SUVs, with a low roofline and smooth body sides. It also uses cameras in place of exterior mirrors, removing a source of aerodynamic drag.

Naturally for an SUV, the Generation EQ has all-wheel drive, as well as 402 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That will get the concept car from 0 to 62 mph in under five seconds, according to Mercedes. The lithium-ion battery pack from Mercedes parent Daimler’s Deutsche Accusative subsidiary boasts 70 kilowatt hours of capacity, enough for an estimated range of 500 kilometers (310 miles).

The interior does away with anything analog. Most information is relayed through a 24-inch TFT widescreen display, and touch controls handle virtually all operations. Touchpads are located on both the steering wheel and center console which, because this is still a Mercedes, is lined with rose gold. The display can show 3D city maps generated by Here (in which Daimler owns a stake). They highlight points of interest by fading other buildings into the background.

The Generation EQ likely heralds an all-electric production SUV from Mercedes. The carmaker describes the concept as “close to production,” and in a press release for the EQ, boss Dieter Zetsche said Mercedes is about to launch an “electric product offensive” that will “cover all vehicle segments.” Watch this space.

As promised, Rivian has started deliveries of its R2 electric SUV. The first version reaching buyers is the R2 Performance with Launch Package, which starts at $57,990 before fees.

That model gives early R2 customers the most powerful version in the confirmed lineup. It comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive, 656 horsepower, 609 lb-ft of torque, and an EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles. Rivian claims it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

Audi tackles Ferrari Luce fever with the hybrid Nuvolari, it’s fastest and beefiest car ever
Meet the Audi that makes Formula 1 technology street legal.
Audi Nuvolari

Audi has just pulled the wraps off the Nuvolari, its first hybrid supercar, and the numbers are genuinely hard to comprehend. Named after Tazio Nuvolari, one of motorsport's most iconic figures, the car produces 1,001 PS and can reach a top speed of over 350 km/h. Only 499 people will ever get to own one, with deliveries kicking off in the first half of 2027.

The Nuvolari can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and can hit the 200 km/h mark in just 6.8 seconds. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine producing 800 hp, paired with three electric motors for a combined system output of 1,001 PS. The electric motors at the front axle alone deliver 2,150 Nm of torque, which is a number that feels almost fictional.

Electric cars are getting more pocket-friendly globally, except for US buyers
The US EV market's 2025 decline wasn't about consumer disinterest. It was the predictable result of eliminating financial incentives.
Porsche Cayenne Coupe electric

In 2025, one in four cars sold anywhere in the world was electric. However, in the US, that figure is closer to one in ten, and it is not moving in the right direction.

The falling EV prices globally have pushed sales to record levels. American buyers, on the other hand, are marching through 2026 with fewer incentives, higher prices, and a shrinking selection of affordable options.
