Acer releases new C720-2848 Chromebook, available for $200 from Best Buy, Amazon today

If you’ve got Chromebook fever, don’t sweat the fact that the HP Chromebook 11 was taken off the market. Acer’s got a new Chromebook that’s even cheaper than HP’s now-pulled offering.

Acer has just announced the C720-2848 Chromebook, which wields an Intel Celeron 2955U Haswell processor, 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display, a 16GB SSD, 2GB of RAM, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and an integrated webcam. It’s also pretty portable, weighing only 2.76-pounds and 0.76-inches of thickness, which makes it easy to carry around. Port selection includes a single USB 3.0 opening, one USB 2.0 connector and an HDMI option for plugging in extra displays. Acer claims 8.5 hours of battery life for the C720-2848.

By snagging an Acer C720-2848, you’ll also be entitled to some extras, namely 100GB of free Google Drive storage for two years and 12 free Gogo Inflight passes, allowing you to surf the web while you dart through the skies. Intel may be preparing an unusual response to the ongoing memory crunch. According to Chinese outlet ITHome, citing ChannelGate, the company’s latest production plan includes restarting production of 13th-gen and 14th-gen Core processors.

The move is expected to increase supply across Intel’s 10th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen CPU families, especially in mainland China. For DIY PC builders, the timing is important. DDR5 memory prices have climbed sharply, making newer platforms harder to justify for anyone trying to build an affordable gaming PC.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Amazon is preparing to shift away from externally sourced processors for its consumer electronics lineup, marking what he describes as the company's first major processor procurement change in 20 years. The transition is expected to begin in 2027.
