The Google-owned company says it's fixed the issue, but it wasn't before everyone had their say.

If YouTube stopped working for you earlier today, then rest assured, you weren’t the only one.

Downdetector said it received more than 800,000 reports of an issue with the video-streaming platform since the first one came in at 7:12 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Google-owned YouTube acknowledged the outage soon after it started, saying: “If you’re not able to play videos on YouTube right now – we’re on it! Thanks for your patience.”

At about 8:37 p.m., it said the issue had been fixed, though it didn’t go into any detail about what had happened.

The glitch occurred in the same week that YouTube started rolling out a new design. It’s not clear if the two events are related.

As usual when a major online service goes down, everyone rushed to X to share their thoughts, frustrations, and humor about the temporary loss of the streaming platform.

Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee commented, “Every once in a while YouTube kinda breaks and it feels like a major cultural event.”

It’s rare for YouTube to go down, but when it does, it can be tough to take.

If you’re unsure whether an issue with one of your streaming services is affecting everyone or just you, the first thing you might do is head to X to find out more.

As mentioned earlier in this article, another site that can help is Downdetector, which tracks and reports the status of websites and online services by collecting user-submitted problem reports in real time. The incoming data is visualized in maps and graphs, and you can share your experiences of the outage in the comments section, too.

A harmless-looking ChatGPT prompt opened the door to gruesome AI images
The findings show how image safety systems can fail without explicit graphic instructions.
ChatGPT

A harmless-looking ChatGPT prompt pushed the latest public version of ChatGPT into generating sexualized and violent images, AI security researchers told the BBC. The finding puts new pressure on OpenAI’s image safety systems, since the request wasn’t described as plainly graphic.

Mindgard, a British AI security startup, said it reached the results by altering a widely shared instruction that had been used for comedy. OpenAI added safeguards after the BBC contacted it, but the researchers said small wording changes still produced concerning images.
