A sequel to the acclaimed Nintendo 3DS platformer Azure Striker Gunvolt will hit the 3DS eShop in September, developer Inti Creates announced during a recent panel session at Anime Expo 2016.

Inti Creates also announced a retail bundle featuring both the original Azure Striker Gunvolt and its upcoming sequel, giving newcomers an easy way to catch up on the series.

Originally released in 2014, Azure Striker Gunvolt is a side-scrolling 2D platformer in the vein of Capcom’s Mega Man series. Taking control of an electricity-wielding protagonist, players “tag” on-screen enemies in order to chain powerful attacks for score-boosting bonuses.

Developer Inti Creates has since partnered with Shovel Knight creator Yacht Club Games to produce Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack, a retail edition that collects both entries in the series. Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will launch simultaneously via Nintendo’s digital storefront and as part of the Striker Pack bundle in September. Currently, there’s no word as to whether franchise spinoff Mighty Gunvolt will also be part of the package.

In addition to its work with the Azure Striker Gunvolt series, Inti Creates assisted Japanese studio Comcept in the creation of the Kickstarter-funded platformer Mighty No. 9. Inti Creates is also a longtime Capcom collaborator, helming the recent 2D platformer throwbacks Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. The company previously developed four games in Capcom’s Mega Man Zero series for the Game Boy Advance.

Currently, Inti Creates is working on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a spiritual successor to Konami’s Castlevania series. Produced by former Castlevania series director Koji Igarashi, Bloodstained secured funding via a successful Kickstarter project in 2015, and a demo version was recently issued to backers.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will launch digitally via the Nintendo 3DS eShop on September 30. The retail-exclusive Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack will also premiere on September 30 in North America.

A new study has found that adults who play certain video games report feeling less lonely and more emotionally resilient than people who don't play games at all. The findings challenge the idea that gaming is just a way to escape from real life and instead tie specific kinds of games to real, measurable shifts in how people cope with stress and isolation.
