Although Sony’s PS3 is expected to overtake the Xbox 360 sometime this year, Microsoft is not about to go down without a fight. Soon the partnership between ESPN and the Xbox 360 will take a giant step forward when the service begins to air 32 of the college football bowl games, including the five BCS. The run will culminate in the National Championship game on January 10, between Oregon and Auburn.

To access the service you will need to download the update, which debuted today, have an Xbox Live Gold membership, and be using a service provider that supports ESPN3. Along with the functionality the update will offer, you will also be able to access the College Bowl Showdown application, which will let you predict the outcome of the games. Once you have your choices locked in, you can then compete against your friends. According to Xbox.com, competitors will also be entered into a special sweepstakes, with a chance to win a trip to the ESPN headquarters or to the ESPY Awards.

The update will also bring changes to the clips and highlights in the form of a “Play All” button, as well as options to help you customize which sports you want to see highlights of.
