Hardware manufacturer Seagate announced that it will produce a limited edition, Xbox One-optimized portable hard drive for the upcoming launch of Gears of War 4, giving players more options when it comes to storage and transport of downloaded games and other console data.

Designed with input from Microsoft and Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition, the drive will feature distinctive Gears of War series branding, and is built “to complement the battle-worn design of Gears of War 4 edition consoles, controllers, and accessories.”

The 2TB portable drive offers enough space to store more than 50 downloadable Xbox One games, and its USB 3.0 functionality ensures that “games playing from the Seagate Game Drive will perform just as if they were playing from the console’s [internal] hard drive,” according to Seagate.

Seagate notes that the drive is aimed at players who frequently visit friends for local multiplayer action. The device instantly connects to any Xbox One console, allowing players to access their Xbox One-specific data without transferring user accounts or relying on cloud storage.

“It is also possible to unplug the Seagate Game Drive and take an entire game library to a friend’s house,” Seagate explains. “It is small enough to slip into a pocket, doesn’t need a power cord, and can store a catalog of downloaded games and achievements for continued gameplay on any Xbox One S or Xbox One console.”

Players who pick up Seagate’s drive at launch will also receive a digital code for two bonus Gears of War 4 Gear Packs, which award in-game bonuses like weapon skins, character outfits, and experience boosts.

Gears of War 4, premiering this October, shifts the Xbox-exclusive third-person shooter series 25 years in the future and features a new playable cast. Players control J.D. Fenix, son of former series star Marcus Fenix, as they experience the aftermath of the Locust war.

Seagate’s Gears of War 4-branded Game Drive is up for pre-order exclusively at GameStop. The hardware launches on September 16 at a suggested retail price of $100.

A new study has found that adults who play certain video games report feeling less lonely and more emotionally resilient than people who don't play games at all. The findings challenge the idea that gaming is just a way to escape from real life and instead tie specific kinds of games to real, measurable shifts in how people cope with stress and isolation.
