'Street Fighter V' rage quitters face online play lockouts with next patch

Publisher Capcom has outlined the next scheduled set of additions for its PC and PlayStation 4 fighting game Street Fighter V, revealing that long-promised penalties for rage quitters will activate this week.

Capcom also revealed new gameplay modes and features that players can expect to see in September’s update, including a Vs. CPU mode and weekend events that will double player rewards for winning ranked matches.

Rage quitters have long plagued Street Fighter V‘s online matchmaking service. Up until now, cowardly players have been able to quit midmatch with little penalty, denying winners an in-game currency boost in the process. This will change in August, as players who disconnect before a match ends will be temporarily locked out of all Street Fighter V matchmaking as punishment.

Offenders will also have their League Points docked, making it difficult to reclaim their previous standings. Street Fighter V‘s rage-quitting penalties will activate after a planned server maintenance period concludes Tuesday, and a “more robust system” aimed at catching cheaters will roll out early next year.

“Since the initial Rage-Quitting system rollout, we have seen a rapid decrease in rage-quitting players, and we believe that this new update will reduce that number even further,” Neidel Crisan, Capcom community manager, said. “That being said, we’re still working on implementing a new, more robust system that will address the issue more completely by early next year.”

Rage quitters are among the many problems that Street Fighter V faced in the months after launch, leaving devoted players at the mercy of Capcom’s erratic update schedule while they wait for fixes. Past updates and character rollouts have suffered from multiple delays, and many players are skeptical if Capcom can issue future updates within any given time frame.

If all goes well, however, Street Fighter V players can look forward to more features and updates coming in a September patch, including a Vs. CPU mode, daily challenges, updated fighter profiles, and alternate character colors and costumes.

Capcom also revealed that Street Fighter V‘s first-ever Double Fight Money online event is scheduled for the weekend of September 2. Players who win ranked matches during the first weekend of September will receive double in-game currency, giving them more cash to spend on new characters, costumes, and other unlockables.
