Skype has acquired video streaming company Qik, the VoIP provider announced on Thursday during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

“I’m happy to announce that we’ve entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Qik, a provider of mobile video software and services that let people capture, instantly share and preserve great moments on video from anywhere,” Skype’s CEO Tony Bates said in a company blog posting.

The sale price was reportedly around $100 million. Qik has about 60 employees split between the company’s headquarters in Redwood City, California and another office in Moscow, Russia.

Qik allows users to make video calls on a range of smartphones running Android, iOS, Symbian, Blackberry OS, or Windows Mobile operating systems. Qik also lets users embed e-mails with video and post video messages to Facebook and Twitter.

” Through this acquisition, we’ll also be able to take advantage of the engineering expertise that is behind Qik’s Smart Streaming technology, which optimizes video transmission over wireless networks,” Bates said. “Together, we’ll focus on providing great products that will allow people around the world to share experiences in real-time video across different platforms, as well as storing those moments so they can be viewed later.”

The number of Qik users grew to over 5 million in 2010, up from about 600,000 at the end of 2009. Skype says it plans on finalizing the deal by the end of the month.

Snapchat is already packed with little symbols that can be weirdly hard to decode. You have streaks, emojis, badges, scores, Best Friends, and if you use Snapchat Plus, a tiny solar system that shows where you sit in someone’s closest-friends list.

The feature is called Friend Solar System, though most people just call it Snapchat Planets. It takes your position in a friend’s Snapchat orbit and turns it into a planet. From Mercury to Neptune, these celestial bodies signify how close a person is to you.

There's no shortage of messaging apps out there. The past decade has given us more options than we know what to do with, largely because smartphones demanded something better than plain old SMS.

Both the App Store and the Play Store are packed with apps that promise to revolutionize the way we communicate. Most of them didn't make it. The truth is, a messaging app is only as good as the number of people using it, and most apps never cross that threshold.
