Being on the lower end of the totem pole in the United States, it’s not too often we get to talk about a mobile release from Sprint that is not only impressive, but exclusive to the carrier. Many of its best smartphones are models that can be found elsewhere.

However, we have been reporting on rumors of the Sprint Vital, a new phone constructed by mobile manufacturer ZTE and today that rumor is now a fact. The company confirmed Vital as the actual name of the phone, and the official specs are pretty spot on with competitive smartphones.

It will be powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor and run on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. The rear-facing camera packs a nice 15 megapixels, while the front-facing is a bit on the womp womp side at just one. The phone connection ranges from 3G to Sprint’s 4G LTE, and can be converted into a mobile hotspot for as many as eight Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

Environmentalists will also be happy to know that the Vital given platinum certification by Underwriters Laboratory Environment, a safety science company that excels in several realms, including the ecosystem. And if you buy one of these phones, be sure to recycle the packaging, which is 98 percent recyclable.

The phone will be available for sale this Friday, June 14 – just in time for Father’s Day … hint, hint – and will only set you back $100, with a two-year agreement and $50 mail-in rebate.

There's no shortage of messaging apps out there. The past decade has given us more options than we know what to do with, largely because smartphones demanded something better than plain old SMS.
