Two of the most visible TV shows featuring transgender individuals are strengthening their ties: Caitlyn Jenner, star of the show I am Cait, is set to join the cast of the hit Amazon original series Transparent, reports the AP. Jill Soloway, creator and executive producer of the critically acclaimed show, revealed the news Saturday during an interview at the GLAAD Media Awards, calling it “a dream come true.”
Jenner, who was originally known as Olympian Bruce Jenner and the patriarch of the blended Kardashian-Jenner family, has been a vocal representative of the transgender community since introducing herself to the world as Caitlyn in June 2015. Instead of shying away from the spotlight, she teamed up with E! to explore gender identity in the docuseries I Am Cait, which is currently in its second season. As much as she’s been in front of the camera, though, both as a professional athlete and as a reality TV star, Jenner’s acting roles have been relatively limited.
It was not hard to convince Jenner to do the show, according to Soloway. “We are all part of the same community,” she said. “A lot of the transwomen who work on our show are also in her show … lots of crossover. Lots of friends.”
Soloway didn’t share what the part will entail, but she did reveal that Jenner will begin filming next week. Whatever the reality star is lacking in acting experience, there’s no denying that the subject matter hits close to home; Transparent centers on the Pfefferman family, particularly Maura (played by Jeffrey Tambor), who, like Jenner, publicly came out as a woman early in the series.
Jenner’s scenes will be part of the third season, which was ordered while season 2 was still in production due to the show’s success. A premiere date for Transparent season 2 has not yet been announced. Season 1 debuted in February 2014, while season 2 came in December 2015.
