Evans, Downey Jr. discuss bad blood in Captain America: Civil War featurette

There’s been a lot of talk about Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice lately, but the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel aren’t the only superheroes we’ll see feuding on the big screen next year. Iron Man and Captain America are set to square off next summer in Captain America: Civil War, and ScreenCrush reports that a new featurette from Marvel Studio’s Phase 2 Blu-ray box set surfaced online yesterday, giving us a closer look at the project.

The spot is just over 90 seconds long, but is  packed with footage from the upcoming film, which plays out as co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo, producer Nate Moore, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. discuss the direction of the project.

The catalyst for the movie’s main conflict is a global agreement referred to as the Sokovia Accords, which is basically the world’s plan to register superheros and regulate vigilante justice. Cap and Stark’s views on superheroes’ place in the world have always come into conflict, and the accords drive a wedge between the two and, consequently, fracture the Avengers team.

Joe and Anthony Russo also co-directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was one of the better Marvel films in recent memory, so we’re cautiously optimistic about this one. That said, it has a ton of moving parts, so establishing a coherent plot will be tricky. Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s most recent ensemble film, felt a tad bloated and Civil War is basically one green guy and one Norse God short of being Avengers 3. There’s also an extra wildcard thrown into the mix, as we don’t yet know how Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) will factor in or where his allegiances will lie.

We’ll find out soon enough, though, as Captain America: Civil War is set to arrive in theaters May 6, 2016, with Avengers: Infinity War – Part I to follow in 2018.
