Fincher wants Christian Bale as his Steve Jobs

Ashton Kutcher has already had a go at it, and it looks like the next person to play Steve Jobs on the big screen could be Christian Bale — at least if David Fincher gets his way. The Social Network director is said to be in talks to direct Sony’s take on the life of the late Apple CEO, and insider rumors suggest he’ll only sign up if Bale gets the starring role.

All of these murmurings come courtesy of an exclusive scoop in The Wrap, which quotes “an individual familiar with the project” (there are always one or two of them around). “Fincher recently met with Sony’s Amy Pascal to discuss the possibility of directing the film, and told her, in no uncertain terms, that he’d only take the reins of the project if Bale plays Jobs,” claims The Wrap. Pascal and Fincher previously worked together on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and American Hustle for Sony.

What we do know about the movie is that Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, The West Wing) is writing the screenplay, based on the best-selling authorized biography of Jobs written by Walter Isaacson. The film will be split into three extended scenes, focusing on the Mac, the NeXT and the iPod respectively. Shooting on the project is expected to begin in late 2014 or early 2015.

As for Christian Bale, he’s currently taking a break after finishing work on Ridley Scott’s Exodus — according to The Wrap he’s not currently attached to any movies actively in development. Neither Bale nor anyone else involved in the project would give an official comment on the rumors.

Open Road’s Jobs biopic, which opened in April 2013, found little favor with critics or audiences. In our own review, we described it as a “conventional and safe” movie that fell some way short of the standards set by The Social Network. Sony will be hoping that its own take proves more of a hit, and Fincher and Bale could be the combination to make that happen.

5 great free movies to watch on New Year’s Day
Five free movies to stream on New Year’s Day that match how you actually want to watch
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt climbing the side of a building in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

New Year’s Day doesn’t always call for a big plan. For a lot of people, it’s about staying in, slowing down, and putting something on without overthinking it. That’s also where free movies start to make more sense, especially when you can press play without worrying about subscriptions or rentals.
The shift toward free, ad-supported streaming has made it easier to find something that fits how you actually want to watch. Sometimes that means an easy film you can let play in the background, while at other times it’s something you settle into properly. The difference isn’t about what’s “best,” but what works for the kind of day you’re having.
Some picks here are familiar rewatch options, others are more recent films that are currently available to stream for free. Each one is chosen to match a different viewing mood, so you can find something that fits without spending time scrolling through platforms trying to figure out what’s available.
We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)

Few films carry over from New Year’s Eve into the next day as naturally as When Harry Met Sally, largely because of how its story resolves. That final sequence gives it a built-in sense of closure, which makes it just as fitting for a quieter New Year’s Day watch as it is for the night before. We first curated this list in 2024, and since then, When Harry Met Sally has remained one of the easiest recommendations to return to.
What keeps When Harry Met Sally in rotation is how well it holds up beyond the occasion. The writing and performances still feel precise, and the film doesn’t depend on surprise. The progression of the relationship, the rhythm of the scenes, and the dialogue carry it, which is also why it works just as well whether you’re watching it closely or letting it play in the background.

Over the past few years, Apple TV has quietly built a library of movies worth watching this weekend, and these three are a good place to start.

This time we have a WWII thriller that Tom Hanks cared enough about to write himself, a redemption story set in small-town Louisiana that will catch you off guard, and a Sundance crowd favorite about the messy, directionless stretch between college and real life.

This Oscar-nominated revenge thriller is one of the 3 best Peacock movies you should watch this weekend (May 8-10)
This weekend's lineup has three films with three very different moods.

This weekend's movie recommendations on Peacock are a bit of a wild mix, and that's exactly the point. Bugonia will make you laugh at things you shouldn't, Promising Young Woman will make you seethe at things you recognize, and The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil will make you root for someone you probably shouldn't.

Three very different films, but they all share one thing: nobody in them is playing by the rules, and that's what makes each one of these underrated movies worth your time.
