A new version of the Magic School Bus is traveling to Netflix and Kate McKinnon will be on board. The Saturday Night Live and Buy Now  star is set to voice the science-loving teacher Ms. Frizzle in the revival series, Variety reports.

Called The Magic School Bus Rides Again, the new series is described as a “reimagining” of Buy Now , which aired from 1994 to 1997. Both are adaptations of the popular Scholastic book series written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. The stories follow Ms. Frizzle, nicknamed “The Friz” by her students, as she uses her magic bus to bring her class to incredible places. They get to see science in action, whether that be up in the clouds or down at the center of the earth.

Beyond her wild field trips, Ms. Frizzle is known for her equally crazy hair, pet lizard, and science-themed attire. The quirky character was voiced by Lily Tomlin ( Buy Now ) during the original series’ four-season run. It was an Emmy-winning role for the actress, so we’ll see if McKinnon can manage similar success with the revival.

McKinnon has lent her voice to projects before, including the animated series Buy Now , Buy Now , and the video game Lego Dimensions, among others. She has also shown her versatility as an SNL cast member, impersonating everyone from Justin Bieber to Hillary Clinton. It will be fun to see her give her own spin to a well-known character like Ms. Frizzle.

The new series will use CG animation. Netflix has plans for 26 episodes, which will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors by offering imaginative and educational stories.

5 great Netflix shows to watch on New Year’s Day and beyond
The cast of XO Kitty.

New Year’s Day is one of the easiest days to end up scrolling Netflix without actually committing to anything. The problem isn’t a lack of options, but choosing something that fits how you’re likely to watch, which usually means a show that starts quickly or keeps a steady rhythm without demanding too much attention.

Whether you’re recovering from a late night or just easing into a slower start to the year, the right show can do most of the work for you. This list narrows it down to five that are particularly effective right now, not just because they’re popular, but because they’re built for this kind of viewing. Some are structured for fast, high-retention binges, others are easier to sit with, and a couple justify a more focused watch if you’re in the mood to engage. Each one fits the kind of momentum that makes getting through a full season or a limited series feel natural, whether it’s today or any other day you want something that holds up without effort.

The debate over AI in Hollywood just found its biggest stage yet. AGC Studios is bringing Critterz to the upcoming Cannes Film Market, positioning it as the first mainstream commercial animated family film to be made with AI assistance woven into its production pipeline (via Deadline).

The film is a feature-length expansion of a 2023 viral short of the same name. That original short was itself one of the earliest films to use OpenAI's creative tools.
