What happened? Matt Reeves teased the new villain of The Batman 2.

  • In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Reeves spoke about writing The Batman sequel with Mattson Tomlin and how they explored new ideas on who should be the villain.
  • “And so picking the right villain that digs into what that does, that goes into his past and his life, that was what drove that discussion,” Reeves said. “I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it. And I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before. So we’re excited.”
  • Reeves and Tomlin did a deep dive in the comics and watched many movies for inspiration, and not all of those are “from the realm of Gotham.”

Why is it important? After two years of development, Reeves is finally sharing some details about The Batman 2.

  • If the primary villain has never been done before, that seemingly rules out previous Batman antagonists that appeared in other movies — Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face.
  • Colin Farrell is expected to reprise his role as Oz Cobb/Penguin in The Batman 2. However, Reeves’ recent comments suggest Penguin won’t be the primary villain.
  • Reeves also mentioned that Cristin Milioti, who won an Emmy for her portrayal of Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, will not appear in The Batman 2.

Why should I care? The Batman 2 is one of the most anticipated superhero movies going forward.

  • In the interview with Horowitz, Reeves said that The Batman 2 will further explore the character of Bruce Wayne because the first story is “so much more about the Batman.”
  • Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman for the sequel. Other returning actors include Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Farrell as the Penguin.
  • Reeves will direct The Batman 2 from a screenplay he co-wrote with Tomlin.

Okay, what’s next? With the script complete, The Batman 2 enters pre-production.

  • The Batman 2 is expected to begin filming in the spring of 2026.
  • The Batman 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.

Scary Movie 6 returned after more than a decade, and the gamble paid off at the box office. The sixth installment debuted to $55 million domestically, the best opening weekend in the series' history, and went on to gross over $215 million worldwide as of late June.

Ahead of the movie's June 5 theatrical release, Wayans Bros. Entertainment launched a website called Subservient Ghostface, where you type a command and watch the masked killer carry it out on screen. It's a clever campaign that borrows directly from Burger King's famous Subservient Chicken stunt from 2004, swapping the chicken suit for the horror icon Ghostface from Scream.
