Maroon 5 may perform at Super Bowl 50 halftime show next year

LA pop rockers Maroon 5 may perform at next February’s Super Bowl 50 halftime show. Frontman Adam Levine and his band had “extensive talks” regarding a halftime performance, according to E! News. Other bands in talks for the music portion of the most-watched TV event of the year include Bruno Mars and Coldplay, but E! said Maroon 5 is the current front-runner.

Regardless of whether Mars is the primary performer, it sounds like the Uptown Funk singer will be involved in the show. Mars, who previously performed at the Super Bowl in 2014, was asked to “curate” the halftime show, according to Billboard.

“Myself and our producer, Ricky Kirshner, were both personal fans of Bruno and had seen him in concert and knew what he could do,” explained NFL media events director Sarah Moll to Billboard last year. “And it was a lot of just telling folks here and getting folks excited about Bruno and taking them to shows and letting them see what he could do. And that’s kind of what got it going.”

The last two Super Bowls saw viewership growth, making them each the most watched ever. In February, Katy Perry (alongside her dancing sharks and Missy Elliott) drew 121 million viewers. February 2014’s halftime performance featuring Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ garnered 115 million viewers.

For its 50th anniversary, we anticipate next February’s Super Bowl half time show will draw similar — if not larger — numbers, especially with the help of Maroon 5 (and possibly Bruno Mars).

Maroon 5, which has released five records since 2002, just put out Singles, their first greatest hits record. They also premiered their latest single Feelings, from their fifth studio record V, on Sept. 15, and toured worldwide this year.
