Legendary hip-hop act N.W.A. may reunite at Coachella in April. Last week, Ice Cube hinted at the reunion on The Talk while promoting his new film Ride Along 2.
“I got some tricks up my sleeve. I can’t reveal it all,” said Ice Cube in an appearance on The Talk. “But I’m trying to bring the members of N.W.A. together. Come with me on the stage. Give everybody a little history lesson on Ice Cube and N.W.A. Westside Connection. Everything I’ve been doing over the years.”
The Compton, CA-originated group brought gangsta rap to the mainstream in the mid ‘80s with controversial songs that were often anti-police and pro-crime. N.W.A. members Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella last performed together in June at the BET Experience for the first time in over 25 years, but were missing founding member Dr. Dre.
Also in April, N.W.A. will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “This means that the group’s mark is solidified,” said Ice Cube to Rolling Stone. “We got some of the most creative, talented people in N.W.A that’s ever been compiled in one group. It’s just exciting that the group as a whole gets recognized by the whole industry as Hall of Fame-worthy.”
Last year, the group received the biopic treatment in the Oscar-nominated film Straight Outta Compton. The title comes from N.W.A.’s critically-acclaimed 1988 debut record featuring the songs Straight Outta Compton, Gangsta Gangsta, and Express Yourself.
Regardless of whether Ice Cube can rile the troops together for a full-on N.W.A. reunion, we do know that the rapper is confirmed to perform at Coachella on April 16 and April 23. Guns ‘N Roses and LCD Soundsystem are also slated to reunite at this year’s event.
