The taxi line from the airport could barely be considered a line at all. The shuttle bus we took to our hotel left with three people on it. And Mon Ami Gabi, the normal site of our Digital Trends kickoff dinner, looked practically deserted.

Is CES dead?

Not at all.

LG’s press conference, the first to kick off a long day of announcements from major manufacturers, was packed to the very back. Outside, suited LG press reps were forced into duty as club bouncers, trying to keep anxious journalists from slithering in the walnut doors behind them.

The numbers may be smaller, but the crowd, and experience, remains. While many companies have pared down the size of their crews to accommodate for tough times, the electricity, elbow-brushing competition and anticipation for what’s on stage is still here.

And we’re psyched to see what’s next.

In Project Zomboid, every brutal death is a learning experience
i love my characters brutal stories in project zomboid featured

Survival games are all good and fun, but I can only enjoy them if they present a decent challenge. RimWorld is a brilliant colony sim, for instance, pitting players against ever-increasing odds until they escape the planet they've crash-landed on or a raid by mechs wipes them away. Mount & Blade: Bannerlord keeps players on their toes with random events that can throw their carefully managed kingdom into disarray. But there isn't a more brutal, story-driven sim game than Project Zomboid.

CES 2022 felt a bit lacking in the smart home department
Roborock Dyad wet-dry vacuum

With CES 2022 drawing to a close, I find myself wondering where the mind-blowing announcements were.

Don't get me wrong. CES still offered a lot of really awesome technology, as well as many devices that I can't wait to get my hands on and try out for myself -- but it definitely lacked the wow factor in the form of unprecedented smart home devices. The products that were announced felt iterative, building on the groundwork of what's already there. That's not a bad thing; devices should continue to improve, and some of them certainly improved in major ways.

Finally, budget GPUs from AMD and Nvidia are a reality again
Pricing information for the AMD RX 6500 XT graphics card.

Nvidia and AMD announced new budget graphics cards at CES 2022: The $199 RX 6500 XT for AMD, and the $249 RTX 3050 for Nvidia. Even with rumors of these cards floating around, I didn't expect to actually see them -- and I didn't expect AMD and Nvidia to price them around $200.

Prices of graphics cards have been going up, and over the past few generations, Nvidia and AMD have continued to distance their mainline products from their budget offerings. CES 2022 forced AMD and Nvidia to reckon with the current prices of graphics cards, and the RX 6500 XT and RTX 3050 seem like a winning pair in a time when graphics options are few and far between.
