Apple unveils faster, sturdier, and more spacious iPhone 17e at the same $599 ask

After months of leaks and speculation, Apple has officially unveiled its latest budget iPhone today. As expected, the iPhone 17e looks largely the same as its predecessor, but introduces a handful of meaningful upgrades while keeping the price unchanged.

The iPhone 17e packs Apple’s A19 chip, the same processor powering the flagship iPhone 17, delivering a significant boost in performance and efficiency over last year’s model. The device also features the C1X modem, which Apple claims is 2x faster than the C1 modem found in the iPhone 16e.

Apple addressed one of the biggest complaints users had with the iPhone 16e by adding MagSafe support, unlocking 15W Qi2 wireless charging and compatibility with a wide range of magnetic accessories, like wireless chargers, cases, and magnetic card holders. Durability has also been improved, with the iPhone 17e’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display now protected by Apple’s Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers 3x better scratch resistance.

A better deal without a bigger price tag

Storage gets a welcome bump as well, with the base model now starting at 256GB, effectively doubling the entry-level capacity at the same price. The rest of the hardware remains unchanged, including the single 48MP rear-facing camera, the 12MP front-facing camera, and a battery rated for up to 26 hours of video playback on a full charge.

The iPhone 17e is priced at $599 and will be available for pre-order starting March 4, with general availability starting March 11. The phone comes in three matte finishes, including the black and white from last year and a new soft pink option.

The iPhone 17e continues Apple’s strategy of offering a more affordable entry point into the iPhone lineup, sitting below the standard iPhone 17 while retaining many of the same core features. With faster performance, improved durability, MagSafe support, and double the base storage, the iPhone 17e refines the formula rather than reinventing it, making it a more compelling upgrade for buyers coming from older iPhone models.

Apple’s next big iPhone camera bet could be 200MP, if a new supply chain rumor holds. A post circulating on Weibo by leaker Digital Chat Station suggests it’s exploring a high-resolution camera setup that lines up with hardware already seen in top Android flagships.

What stands out isn’t just the megapixel count, it’s the sensor size. The rumor points to a roughly 1/1.12-inch sensor paired with 200 megapixels, which signals a push toward better image quality, not just bigger numbers.
