iPhone 17e: Everything you need to know about Apple’s cheapest iPhone

Same $599 price, better chip, more storage, and MagSafe at last, the iPhone 17e makes a strong case for budget iPhone buyers in 2026.

With the iPhone 16e, Apple tried to revive the affordable iPhone segment by offering a familiar form factor and capable hardware. But despite that, 2025’s cheapest iPhone release wasn’t as popular as the others. To change that, Apple has launched the iPhone 17e with plenty of upgrades this year.

Apple has packed it with the latest-generation A19 chip (which currently powers the iPhone 17), a 48MP primary camera, 256GB of base storage, and a quality-of-life improvement: MagSafe wireless charging — all at the same $599 starting price as the iPhone 16e. So, without any further ado, here’s everything we know about the iPhone 17e.

Release date and price rumors

While some rumors suggested a February 19 launch date for the iPhone 17e, that didn’t happen. Instead, Apple kicked off a three-day product announcement streak on Monday, March 2, 2026, with the iPhone 17e breaking cover the same day.

The week culminated in the Special Apple Experience event on March 4, 2026, held across three cities: New York, London, and Shanghai.

Pre-orders began on Wednesday, March 4, while general availability commenced on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. But exactly how cheap is the new iPhone 17e?

Apple retains the $599 starting price from the iPhone 16e while doubling the base storage from 128GB to 256GB; that’s quite bold of a smartphone company amid the ongoing memory crisis. It also makes the iPhone 17e $100 cheaper than the equivalent iPhone 16e variant.

128GB$599Not available
256GB$699$599$100 cheaper
512GB$899$699$200 cheaper

Despite all the reports about the ongoing memory crisis, Apple’s long-term partnership with its suppliers and the scale of its operations give it a unique advantage over other brands, even as other smartphone makers (including global giants like Samsung) struggle to control smartphone prices.

Design and display

Apple’s iPhone 16e is often criticized for its outdated design (the gigantic notch at the top of the screen is what some buyers find most annoying). Despite a number of rumors suggesting the notch’s departure in favor of the Dynamic Island, Apple had other ideas.

The iPhone 17e looks almost identical to its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, with no notable design update. Apple is still using the iPhone 14’s design template as a blueprint for the iPhone 17e, and the notch and relatively thicker bezels are still very much a part of the latest affordable iPhone.

The choice of materials, including the aerospace-grade aluminum frame with glass on the front and back, remains the same. You also get the customizable Action Button. The quality of the glass used for the screen has been improved significantly.

For one, it now gets Apple’s Ceramic Shield 2 for improved scratch resistance. Second, it also gets a new anti-reflective coating that reduces glare from the screen. As for colors, the purple or lavender finish didn’t happen. The iPhone 17e comes in three colors: black, white, and a new soft pink.

Coming to the screen, the iPhone 17e is rumored to ship with a 6.1-inch OLED screen (smaller than the 6.3-inch screen on the regular iPhone 17 or the Pixel 10a) that supports a 60Hz refresh rate and 1,200 nits of peak brightness, making it, well, usable.

No ProMotion, no dramatic upgrades in brightness, just the regular, Apple-fashioned refinement. The iPhone 17e remains the smallest iPhone in Apple’s current lineup, and its design still draws more from 2022’s iPhone 14 than from anything that came after it.

Performance and software

Under its familiar hood, the iPhone 17e features Apple’s A19 (3nm) chip, a binned version with one fewer GPU core (four instead of five). In practise, this is the type of difference you’re more likely to notice in a benchmark than in daily life. I’ve been using the iPhone 17 as a daily driver, and the chip has more computational power than I can use on most days, and the iPhone 17e shouldn’t fall far behind.

The chipset is paired with Apple’s in-house C1X modem (similar to the iPhone Air), which is up to 2x faster than the C1 in the iPhone 16e and uses up to 30% less battery power. Apple’s N1 chip, however, didn’t make the cut.

Like the iPhone 16e, the iPhone 17e features 8GB of RAM, which is the bare minimum to support Apple Intelligence (both current and upcoming features). The baseline storage, as mentioned previously, has been upgraded to 256GB. You can also get the phone in a 512GB variant, though I can’t imagine someone getting the 17e and filling it up with photos or videos.

At launch, the iPhone 17e shipped with iOS 26.3. However, Apple just released iOS 26.4 on March 24, 2026, and going forward, all iPhones should ship with the latest version preinstalled. You get all the Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, Gemoji, Clean Up, and more.

You also get plenty of satellite connectivity features, including messaging, Roadside Assistance, Emergency SOS, and personal safety features like Crash Detection. However, the revamped version of Siri isn’t here yet. It could be showcased at WWDC 2026 and be available in a later iOS version.

Cameras and battery

The only back camera on the iPhone 17e features a 48MP Fusion sensor, which allows capturing images at 24MP or 48MP resolution, along with optical-quality 2x in-sensor zoom, and Dolby Vision HDR video recording (up to 4K at 60 fps).

The camera hardware, including the lenses and sensors, is unchanged from last year. In simpler words, your iPhone 17e is stuck with the same 1/2.55-inch sensor we got on the iPhone 16e. The larger 1/1.56-inch sensor on the iPhone 17 remains the privilege of the flagship models.

As for the front camera, don’t get your hopes up. The iPhone 17e features the regular 12MP selfie shooter we’ve seen on older iPhones, before Apple spoiled us with the Center Stage front camera on the iPhone 17 lineup. So, the handset doesn’t get the new selfie camera features, including Dual Capture, ultra-stabilized video, and multi-aspect selfies.

Beyond the cameras, the iPhone 17e carries the same 4,005 mAh battery capacity as the iPhone 16e. The battery didn’t get bigger — but thanks to the efficiency gains from the A19 chip and C1X modem, Apple still rates it at up to 26 hours of video playback.

MagSafe has finally arrived on the ‘e’ series, not in its full glory, but it still works. The iPhone 17e supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, but the speed is limited at 15W — not 25W.

In conclusion, the iPhone 17e should get upgrades across the board, making it one of the easiest recommendations for prospective iPhone buyers on a budget, buyers who aren’t looking for the fancy features like a multi-camera setup or 120Hz screen.

The foldable iPhone hasn’t launched, but Apple is already planning its successor
Second-generation foldable iPhone could be lined up for 2027
Foldable iPhone

Apple's first foldable iPhone is still expected to debut later this year, but the company may already be looking beyond its first attempt. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a second-generation foldable iPhone for release in 2027, just one year after the original model is expected to arrive. The device is reportedly codenamed V78 and will launch alongside the 20th-anniversary iPhone model. It looks like Apple might be going all in on foldables as a long-term product category rather than a one-off experiment.

The Cupertino giant has spent years watching rival smartphone makers refine foldable hardware. Samsung, Google, Honor, Oppo, and others have gone through multiple generations of designs, experimenting with everything from narrow book-style devices to wider tablet-like formats. Apple appears to have waited until the category matured before making its move.
